Anyone Know Anything About Being Deaf in Dallas?

We are moving to the Dallas, Texas area (Garland, TX) and I want to know what is available for the deaf in Dallas area. My fiancee lives there so that is where we will start out. We will move to Austin if we have to though! I know my son will not want to attend the residential school in Austin because he has wanted a "family" for so long and this union between me and my man not only brings a father, but a brother and a dog! So, he will NOT do well away from us.

Anyway, if anyone has any info on Dallas please let me know something!

School programs
Camps
Movie Theaters
ASL courses (the whole family will have to learn)
Sports groups (my son has recently expressed an interest in Basketball)
 
I dont know much about the Texas Deaf community but I can ask my brother since he lives in AZ and has several friends who live in TX.

My older son moved to Dallas last October 6th. He apparently is very happy there, he starts to looking for the job and Art School. I miss him.

Hope, you and your family are settle down in Dallas and make new friends. :)

- School are vary offer deaf program
- no idea about camp for deaf in DFW, usually there is Sign Camp.
- Movie theatre with caption is at Grapevine Mill, vary schedule can be found on local newspaper to look for CC icon.
- ASL, suggest to learn from social such as deaf chat coffee or community college, either Tarrant Community College or Collin Community College. Maybe North Lake College.
- Sport, you can get your kid involved with mainstream sport to play. That's not hard.

Don't worry about that incident in Fort Worth, it's pretty far to terrible area where you gonna live there

What is deaf chat coffee? Is that a location in Dallas? Thanks for the schools for the ASL!!

Also, are you saying that there are various schools (as in many schools), or that the schools vary (as in the differences in teaching methods)?

And lastly, uh... :cool2: what incident in Fort Worth???

Former resident DFW for 20 years.

School programs are happens in few school that accept deaf program like DISD or RISD. I went to DISD (Stonewall Elem/Spence Jr High/Samuell High). RISD (Peace High). You can ask anyone in RISD who went to Richardson school.

Camps come out from whole Texas to attends Deaf Youth/Camp Sign/Lion Camp, etc.. It tend camp in south of Texas.

Movie Theaters comes in once a months, not hear from them since.

ASL Courses. Attend to EASTFIELD college has ASL classes there. Brookhaven college and Richland college has them, too. I cant rememeber what name of College in Dallas area.

DAD has deaf sport programs. Can ask them for more information. should be 18 years or older.

Mostly above are in DALLAS area. Sorry, if it been changed after I moved.

Oh, Deaf Chat Coffee many area in Richardson. There is other area in Fort Worth and areas, too.
 
I have friends in Dallas, but they are hearing so I have no help available to you, but I do wish you, your son and your new family well on your new life in Dallas. Sounds like it could be interesting.
 
I used to lived in Houston for a year. One thing I noticed is softball is big in Texas. Yes, Dallas has a deaf softball team and played against Houston. Congratulations on the upcoming marriage.

Yep, I was there last month visiting my roommate's family in Irving. Doesn't look too low-class to me.

there is a deaf comunity in dallas it is located off of cedar springs and crestview.
There is some appartments that are for the deaf and well its a whole comunity.
Also at the apartments there are classes to learn I went there myself to learn but moved further away
and now i am having to do it just by making friends and talking to them
 
you can call starbucks and they have get togethers at diffrent ones on Fridays and Thursday.I have been to the one in hurst and the one in Preston and northwest hwy

The little boy must be almost grown up by now! :shock:
