Welcome to alldeaf.com!! Remember, you need to let me know where else you posted as well as who you are!!!

For others outside my class...

What do you think about an ASL class using alldeaf.com?

........

Hopefully they know to take EVERYTHING they read on here with a grain of salt.

Celicaturtle is Shawn Deaton. i am in poston's asl class so i really don't know how a deaf person would feel about an asl student posting. it seems kinda weird like a computer geek posting on a car forum. mabye not totally wrong but perhaps misplaced. just a thought...

Shawn, there are alot of Alldeaf members that are hearing, taking up ASL classes. This is a great place to learn a little more about the deaf culture. But as interpreter said here, take it with a grain of salt.

This is but a small window into the Deaf world. It is like most any place, as there are people that will reach out, and there are people that will dislike. I am HOH, and have found so many great people in the Deaf world, but, alas, some that hate me for being hearing. Their loss...

Poston's example:

I'm Timmy Jones
I posted on the "Cochlear Implants, who needs them?" thread.
On that thread I said, "..."
Ella's Flashlight means...

I'm Alexys Johnson,
I posted on the "girl dies aged 7 by cochlear implant" thread.
On that thread i posted "I think it be required to get proper vaccination. a] because she is 7 and in pretty much every school you have to have the proper vaccinations to attend for the safety of them and other students. b] to prevent or to rule out the factor of the girl getting sick because of not having proper vaccination. c] the doctors should check out their patients medical history before they do any sort of surgery or operation in anybody's body. thats just my thoughts..."
Ella's flashlight means a Deaf mute's search for Deafhood enlightenment.

so check this out Poston i went to the movies and after words i went into WAlMart to screw around and ride the bikes tonight right...But i acted deaf and people acually had the compacity to laugh at me cause they thought i was deaf...I was actually kinda offended by it, i really cant imagine what deaf people go through in there daily life's...it must suck to have immature people laughing all the time at you :(

Mr. Poston--PLEASE instruct your students on the use of common curtesy and respect.

Jillio-I can't tell you how embarressed I was for COOKmister21's response. I quickly had a chat with him in class about the inappropriatness of his actions and discussed with the class why we don't "act Deaf." Needless to say, he's not one of my "star" pupils!

There it is for all to see Cookmister21! I am not certain what was expected during this "Class Exercise" but it has been a learning experience for me. There are many lessons in life, and losing my hearing has enlightened me. Perhaps these students should be allowed to become deaf for a day. Fit them with earplugs and make them step out into a noisy environment and see how people react when they realize that the student does not "get it" when spoken too. How many of these students would become angry themselves? Frustrated? Embarrassed? This is OUR world, and for most of us, this is OUR life. I can only hope the class will never need to understand first-hand the loss of something such as hearing or sight or mobility. Think about this...please. The people here are not lab subjects...Thank you for your time.

Acting Deaf

I liked that in depth input by SAYWHATKID, however, for hearing people this may serve better. If you have ever been to another country, say like Chad or Niger, where few villages speak the same language, your experience there would be just as frustrating as if you were hard of hearing in America. In some countries in Africa you might come across ten villages and listen to twenty or thirty languages. That might serve as an example hearing people can relate to. The closest i have ever been to experiencing deafness isn't even worth posting, however my experience in foreign countries allows me to understand the frustration of not being able to communicate fully or effectively. Thank goodness America allows us to learn such a interactive language!!! ASL
On the topic of languages, if an American and a Japanese person went to Finland and tried talking to an older person who never learned either language, the American would have a very difficult time communicating. Strangely the Finnish language is closer to Japanese than any other language. Even though they are on separate continents!!!! Now there is some thing to look up, eh?

Now i don't claim to be an expert in anything, if i am wrong in any information I have sent out, please do correct me. Thank you!

Well put, you are obviously thinking. I tip my cap to you. I agree with your anology on foreign languages. Some people have a far different view on deafness, and some appear to be trying to pass instead of learn. I am thinking you are doing this because you are interested, and it shows. Keep up the studies!

im jake long
i posted on the "is asl a foreign language" thread.
i said that i think it counts as one at our school.

Studies

Why thank you Saywhatkid.
as for studies i aspire to become some political analyst, focusing on mostly on the Eastern European cultures (more specifically Ukraine, former Yugoslavia, Romania, Moldova, ect.). However I feel it is important to learn of cultures and languages closer to home to aide me in my studies. I have learned a little of Mexican culture in middle school, I became interested for a while in Canadian culture once I learned they were very involved in WWII (My favorite subject is WWII), America now celebrates Black History Month and so along with that we learn of the important figures of the Movement. However I see nothing along the lines of HOH history day, week, or month!
I love to watch the History channel and much of what they document is past wars and important figures in hearing history. I have never seen anything related to the hard of hearing on any network. And the subject is completely left out of American History. I'm not trying to down play any other important event or person in history, but the hard of hearing have left a mark on American society and they deserve some room in the history books!!!!
Also random fact, the US is spending about $950 a day per person, on personnel from one of the largest private security firms in the world, BLACKWATER USA!!!!!!! look up Blackwater USA.

remember i am not an expert on anything and don't claim to be, so if i am wrong, please correct me! thank you!

This is Jillian Amort.
I posted on the "Future Shock" Thread...
I found it pretty interesting...
This is what i had to say... = ]

Technology and scientific advances may be on the rise, yet schools are learning to support the deaf culture more and more, hearing students becoming involved in ASL classes and entering into the deaf surrounding to learn. Maybe it will be more...well...not acceptable...but not as looked down on as a bad thing to be deaf. In the future, it may not bee seen as a bad thing, a barrier, therefore, continuing on with the deaf culture...yet maybe then...in the future, it will all mend together, the hearing and deaf cultures...

i don't know...do deaf people NOT want to have a mending together of both cultures, do they want to stay their own? or would it not be such a bad thing if it all comes together more so than today?

(i remember when i was younger i was getting into my family's kids dictionary and it had the alphabet handshapes...and i was soo eager to learn ASL...finally getting the chance to Freshman year in high school...continuing on to this year and throughout my high school experience. AND today...the rage is baby sign? maybe SIGN IS ON THE RISE, TOO!...not just medical advances!?)

saywhatkid...you speak of being deaf so proudly and than go on to say that you "can only hope..." making it sound you wouldn't want to have a deaf culture life style if you could go back and make a change in your life...? or making hearing people sound unsesitive to other lifestyles...?
I can only hope the class will never need to understand first-hand the loss of something such as hearing or sight or mobility. Think about this...please. The people here are not lab subjects...Thank you for your time.

Pride

Where is the love? Yes the differences in cultures can cause some tensions, however, I believe that it is becoming more apparent between the hard of hearing and hearing as both become more involved with each other. Some think that the cochlear needs to be put in every deaf child, while others believe it would destroy a person leaving them with no identity, or culture, just some machine human. That subject is too sensitive for me to comfortable get involved in.
Just curious, Joe.
