For a HoH, it may be a different story, but no snapping for deafies!
You will look like a fool if you keep snapping 3 inches away from a deaf person's head for five minutes. Up to you!
That make for a funny "Jackass" style video.

Like I said. Snapping is a habit, and sometimes its my first instinct. I guess it might just be best to get up out of my seat, walk over and politely tap them on the shoulder. Although, the laser pointer sounds like fun.

Ohhhhhhhh okayyy.... Now I get it. Cental was talking about how he snaps to get a hearies attention, and accidently did it to a deafie. Man am I slow... My deaf friend has a bilateral loss of 85 to 87, and most of the time I can clap REALLY LOUD and it will make him look around to see where it is coming from. Otherwise, I just wave my arms.

How did you get into the habit of snapping to get someones attention? In my house snapping usually means something similar to "shut up".... like when my parents always snap and me and my brother while they are talking on the phone, or when we interupt them.

Snapping is a habit because we have to snap at work to get floor support's attention.

Isnt that dangerous? What's wrong with his coworkers?

I hate it when hearing people throw things at me to get my attention. It is downright rude. Funny, my deaf friends dont do that to me.

I wave, stomp, and throw things haha. But with my deaf friends, throwing things is appropriate because we know eachother - otherwise throwing something might be considered rude. Haha.

I can accept flick the light or wave. But I hate when people tap on my shoulder or touch me to get my attention because it always make me jump. I don't want people to stomp on the floor if they are in my bedroom because it will make stuff fall off the drawer or shelf, lol. Not funny if it breaks.

Stomp the floor AND throwing items will be a forbidden thing to do at my house. Yup!

Seem like I can accept thing that get my attention through my sense of sight but not sense of touch. Weird huh?

LOL, I usually wave my hand around or tap the person. My son does that when he wants my attention too.

The worst thing you can do is to throw a pen or a ball of paper... SO stupid and embarassed. [After getting hit by a pen] "WHAT THE FUCK...[hearing people gasped at the fact that a Deaf person can swear so CLEARLY] oh, what do you want, you little... *mumbling*?"

[edited: You also can wave your hands. One student in eighth grade was SO impressed by my ability to see her waving her hands out of corners of my eyes even though she was like in back of the classroom while I was all way up front... and she kept doing it over and over yet she got nothing to say to me whenever I signed to her: "What do you want?" Her: "You can SEE me waving to you?! Wow..." Oy. Eventually I ignored her waving her hands and the teacher caught her and told her to quit fooling around. Embarassed herself...!]

My dad would throw gummy bears at me.. that was his way of getting my attention.

My sister would wave at me, tap me, or whatever it took for her to get my attention, same as mom.

boyfriend is still learning LOL. he's not used to being with deaf people hehe.

With me, I have very good eyes, If you trying to wave at me from the sideways, I could noticed. Whatever you do, don't bang your feet on the ground nor bang your fist on a table, It annoyed me. Hope you taking notes.
Guilty! My son was across the playground once when he was little and had his back to me. I threw a rock to land at his feet so he would look up--should have seen the looks I got fromthe hearing kid's parents!

LOL Some of posts here are hilarious!

When I was young... Many people were very fed up with me since I was hard to get attention. At age 18, when I discovered that I have Usher Syndrome and I told them that I have one. They all felt so bad for being hard on me almost all of my life. Now they understands so they often rub softly on my shoulders just to get my attention. Also I got my cochlear implant over three years ago. Now many people just shout my name to get my attention. Its work well.

I really hate it when people stomp the floor or bang on the desk to get people's attention. That is very embrassing and annoying.

For me the best way to get my attention is to wave at me in the deafie sort of way but I dont mind that flailing sort of wave that hearies do as well.

As for throwing stuff, that gets me mad like anyone else.

Stomping the floor would be acceptable if we were in a house that had wood floors that vibrated well, just dont do it too much or I'll start giving you funny looks and eventually learn to ignore the stomps.

Now I like the idea of softly rubbing my shoulders.......

I dislike when one taps on my shoulders, stomping on floor, flicking lights and even throwing stuff at me to get my attention.

I don't have problem if one taps on my arm (not shoulder) or wave to get my attention as long it does not attract attention from other people.

My grandmother tends to stomp on floor and sometimes make some moves to get my attention. At first, it was so annoying but I am OK with her doing that now as I live in Georgia and she lives in Tennessee.

I really don't care how somebody gets my attention. I prefer a wave.
