Making involuntary noises
How do other dhh people feel about making accidental noises? My husband tells me that sometimes I'm sitting reading or something and I'm making squeaking noises or something. I tend to do something like hold my breath a bit and make a snorting noise. I find it a bit embarassing to think that I might be making noises at any time, specially around people I don't know. Perhaps I am sitting on a train reading a book and making moaning and groaning noises, it seems I do it quite a lot. I guess a lot of people have that experience, from Tourettes to Cerebral Palsy to all sorts of other conditions. Do you make noises (that you know of!) and does it bother you?

My best friend's wife moans all the time, especially when she eats. Found out years ago when my hearing brother told me. He said it was like listening to a porn flick at the dinner table.
On a serious note: I used to make a lot of noise, but the constant criticizing from my parents and siblings made me quiet as a mouse over time. Keep in mind that there are a LOT of hearing people that make disgusting noises and don't give a rat's ass what anyone thinks.

.....(the lady "moaning")....yeah...we do make "noises" . Seems I sort of "grunt" at times....and right lately, ..my sons come into the room and ask..."Did you call me?"....Guess I was just thinking about them and unconsciously spoke their name....And there was this deaf person who wore false teeth....everytime he ate, he sort of "smacked". His wife was always on his case to shut it up!....

^ UGH!! I would say many Deaf I've know do make noises unknowingly, like grunting or deep sighing or breathing out loudly through their nose or mouth. They don't realize it and honestly I've never minded. Sometimes though lol, they will pound the table or throw something not realizing how loud the sound is (like tossing their phone on table or something).
One time a group of hearing and deaf were chatting and one of the Deaf guys pounded the table for emphasis and scared the hell out of me as a hearing person. He laughed and said he didn't realize how loud that was

I tend to make a lot of noise when my family is sleeping. I'm a night owl. So i'm usually stuck in my room at night. I'm always active in my room. I'm always reading a book, watching tv , listening to music (with my personal audio cable), drawing, and trying to find stuff by going through my desk or under my bed. My bed squeaks a lot when i'm moving around in it. My dad complains a lot about the noise i make in my room. I try really hard to be quiet for them when i'm staying up late at night. But it seems impossible! even when I think i'm being quiet, they still complain about it.
When I talk, my family thinks i'm really loud when I talk. But to me it sounds normal. I don't know if its because i'm not hearing right in my CIs or its just because i never noticed it. Another thing that they complain about is how loud i walk. which is kind of weird. because i never heard myself walk before. I try to be considerate of how much noise i'm making when people are sleeping or when they are not to be bothered with. I try my best to be quiet, but they always find a way somehow to tell me that i'm making a lot of noises. It sucks! |

I used to have a gf that was hearing. She would consistently remind me that I'm making too much noise when eating. Kinda like a smacking sound. Of course I would try hard to keep the smacking to a minimum, but no matter how hard I try, I just don't hear it. It would always aggravate her.

I've been accused of breathing too loudly.. but my main issue is not having an "inside" voice. I didn't realize after 31 years of being unaided just how loud I am. My old boss used to mouth "inside voice" to me when I'd get ramped up really loud. I mean.. I hear myself just fine.. therefore I'm not talking too quietly and all is well right?

I know I do it. Back when my parents were still denying that anything was the matter and I was struggling through music lessons, my teacher was always getting on my case for "making a grunting noise between notes". I still have no idea what she was talking about, but I believe her that I did it.
I still do similar things, just because I don't realize that other people could hear whatever it was. I'm embarrassed by it, but that's just me. I'm not a fan of being the center of attention.

My deaf friend doesn't make noises when she eats but, boy!, her hearing daughter sure did when she was younger (around the ages of 7-8). I mentioned it to her one day when we were all together eating, "K, try to chew with your mouth closed, eating with it open is rude." My friend had no idea K made so much noise and, from then on, she asked if I would let her know if there were any times that her kids did things that were not appropriate in a hearing environment. Well from then on, whenever I would go over to their place, I would bring K a pack of gum and tell her it was for 'chewing practice'. It was an ongoing things between us for quite a few years - she loves gum and always looked forward to demonstrating her 'newly acquired chewing skill" :-) haha.

oops. It is a noisy world out there to the person with hearing. That old saw about if the tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it did it make a sound? Of course it did.

I'm VERY self-conscious when it comes to making sounds. I'm wayyyyyy one of those who pumps out a lot of bodily noises, a heavy breather, blow my nose like a choo-choo, a loud talker, etc. I try so hard to be so quiet to the point to where it kind of creeps me out to think about how hard I'm trying but I can't help it. I'm definitely embarrassed when someone turns their head my way after a good honk.

I've been told that I do this from time-to-time. When I first lost my hearing, it wasn't really an issue, but now from what I'm told, I do make some squeaks and squeals every now and again. I have no idea I'm doing it, but it is what is I guess!
