You can adopt them, but it'd be kinda bad for you. Because espically you are deaf. and the dog wouldnt be able to alert you easily... as for apartment, a lot apartment doesnt allow pet.. if you had a trained hearing dog, they would let u have it, as long u have certificate to prove that your dog is trained for hearing impaired/disabled people... to help people.. I would love to have a deaf dog. I can get it, but it kinda make me nervous because the dog cant hear car coming by, they get hit by car. they get killed thousands a year...

Ummm...every dog, hearing or deaf, should be in the house, or in a fenced yard, or on a leash, or on a farm, not in the street with cars. Some hearing dogs get hit by cars because they are just too stupid or too excited to get out of the way.
BTW I love dogs.

I think what's really meant here is a trained hearing dog for the deaf...then they can go/live anywhere you go.

Right on -- people who have certified hearing dogs working for the disabled -- are allowed to have the dogs with them ANYWHERE they go and live. By law, if this is denied -- it's discrimination.

Deaf dogs can be a pain in the butt to train. You're better off having only one dog if it's deaf. If you want two dogs, you better have a hearing dog already that's fully trained before bringing in a deaf dog. I speak from experience and believe me, it's not easy.

i dont know if have you ever hear about ada law that can allowen u have a dogs for disable deaf people. i used to live in apt and i know that i have to pay for pets to live in my apt. I did told to manger apt about dog ada law. She said
*oh yes that right, oh well u can have one dog in ur apt*
that was simple question because i need a dog who can hear the doorbell and protect over my home when stranger is try to broke in our apt. that is a lot reason to be safe have an dog in our apt.
maybe u should try that ask manger about ada.

Teaching a dog sign

One time when I was picking out a sign dictionary, I found a someone there looking for one too.

I asked the, why they where learning sign... they said "we have a deaf dog". I almost thought it was a joke, but she was serious.

The dog had learned "Sit" and "stay" so far!

Hmm... interesting! I was walking back to my apartment yesterday and I saw this guy talking to his dog in sign language. The dog knew all the commands in sign language!

Dog's learning sign

WARNING: THIS IS A JOKE

Dogs should not learn sign! They should be taught to bark normally and read lips! Dog should get a CI! Barkism is better!

Now when my friends tell me they can't learn sign I'll tell them "hey, my DOG can learn sign".

That's true. However, if there was another dog present and you are trying to teach both dogs to obey commands... it would be a problem. It's best to have one dog at a time. A year or two later, you can get another dog. That way, the new dog can learn from the old dog.

In the humor section of the deaf dog site, it mentions that often hearing dogs begin to learn the signs too.... and respond MORE to the signs than the oral commands!
