To the cat owners out there --- advice?

Hey there cat owners - just need to seek some further advice from you guys as you know I have a 12 week kitten coming home on friday. Me and my girlfriend are taking her to the south coast for the christmas/new year break in December, and I would like to ask for some advice on how to travel with the cat ensuring that the cat is in comfortable state of the trip. (And yes, we have a carrier) The trip is 2.5 hours long.

you should try taking the kitten on a few shorter trips and see how she does. not all cats are the same. some get car sickness and others don't.

but when in doubt, call your vet. they shouldn't have any problem giving traveling advice

hope that helps

Take the kitten for a car ride EVERYDAY til she get use to it. It don't have to be an hour ride. Just a quick drive around the block or to grocery store to grab couple of things or get more gas or whatever. That's what I did with my old cats, and most of them LOVES it. Easier than put her in the carrier. I am sure she will be fine on the road trip.

Good luck!

If the cat is not a good traveler, the vet can give you tranquilizers . We had one cat that just couldn't travel without it. But by giving him one half an hour before leaving, he could relax in his crate and tolerate it.

If your cat does not travel well, you can get a cat sitter. That's what I do. My kitty is happier that way.

take a litter box with you, a kitty cage because some cats dislike motion
become scared and will climb allover the car which is not safe and also
so annoying after a while.

make frequent stops so the cat can stretch- keep it on a leash so it won't run away,
and make sure it drinks a lot (hydration) but feed scarce because
it may be nauseous, and puke in a car.

same here.

we moved from washington dc to syracuse for about almost 7 hours. We did give both kitties a medicine of tranquilzers. I felt that it wasn't working that way. one kitty wont be quiet, keep meowing for 7 hours and the other kitty kept quiet and didnt move for one inches for 7 hours. I know they are not happy travelers. oh well.

any time if we go away, and have someone to watch after our kitties. so they are happy.

some kitties love traveling. i want that! lol

I reckon the kitten will be fine for the two hour drive, it is an easy drive down the south coast. I'll be glad if Cleo (my kitten) likes the house down there. Also with my two little sisters, cooing with the cat

Have you driven your kitten to other places? If not, time to start.

Don't worry. Your cat will have you trained soon. Then, he'll be running your household.

Not yet, we get Cleo on Friday and we plan to take her on short trips to get her to get used to the cat carrier so we got enough time to get her used to it by the time we head out for christmas.

I aint be much of help cuz I never take my cats travel with me cuz I dont like them to get lost and now knowing where they are. In the new places the cat will learn a new place to live not for traveling. They dont know about the vacation time and for a short stay. They will get confuse so that is why I leave my cats home when ever I go on a trip. I have a friend to will take care of them while I was gone. They are happy to stay home but miss their mom. LOL

Is there any way to get the kitten after you take your trip? I would not travel with a kitten that young , they get frighten very easy and could run off. Yeah leave the kitten at a reliable kennel and go on your trip. I would not leave it at friend house or bring it someplace where will be people going in out of the house a lot.

2.5 hrs? lo I got carried away

Still the carrier and the litter box is always useful no matter how short the trip-
take it from the wise

Not the best idea to take the cats on short trips because of the heat down there in Australia and it's summer there. You should never leave pets in the car. If going on a one way trip and take the kitten to a home, that's fine.

And they check and see if the cat will have to be quarantine . When a niece of mine moved to Hawaii her cat had to be quarantine for a few months. I wanted to go Mexico but I could no bring my dog as he would had to been quarantine longer than I planned on staying there.

Not if you train a dingo to hold the carrier in place.

I guess we were lucky. We moved from Central Florida to South Florida and had 2 cats in the car. It was a 4 hour drive and at the time, there were no cat carriers. Luckily, both cats loved riding in the car. They slept on a pillow on the back-seat floor. We stopped at a service plaza on the turnpike and they had some food and water and used the litter box. These were cats who did not play at all. They hated any playtime at all.

Indeed you were lucky
I had two cats once.
One of them was just like yours - liked car travels, except he tend to have a motion sickness so if ate too close to the trip he vomited in the car,
so we could feed him only about no later than 10 hrs before the trip.
Then lots of water.
But in the car he would lay down quietly.
he loved to be taken for camping, picnicking and the likes - never ever strayed away. always came when called away, jumping out of the bushes sooner or later
Smart as a whip

The other cat though, he was either scared of movement or of the engine
and crawled all over entire car like crazy.
There was the constant danger of him either blocking the driver's view,
or sliding under the gas or brake's pedals.
Not to mention him squirming in the lap without a moment's break
and meowing every little while
was quite annoying, too.
This little piggy stayed home

Fuzzy

my two cats was fine, when we took them on short car trips, only meowed out of curiousity -- so this is a good sign, they are fine with car trips

So you ended up getting two cats instead of one? That's great! I think a cat's favorite cat toy is another cat.

I wish you many years of happy cat companionship.

if interested to teach a cat to accept a leash, though, it will take time to do it, though a kitten would acclimate faster.
Pair up the use of the leash with tasty - meaty, not kibble - treats and gradually increase initial leash use so that the cat learns to associate leash= good stuff. Then you can reduce or eliminate the treats.
