I recently came across an article in a newspaper, There is a study being made for cats. What the volunteers are doing, is to go to certain neighborhoods, trap stray cats....spay and neuter them, then release them back ito the neighborhood which they were trapped.

They are "testing" to see if this would work to cut down on the stray cat population....as the cats could not breed/mate....and less fighting...and instead of ethuzing them...they could continue to live in the wild, or someone could take them in as a pet....

I think it's a very good idea!...

It is being done a lot and it works well, as it also prevents new strays from moving in to the already populated area.

yep. exactly what Bott said. This has already been proven cost effective way to control the population. They're doing same for pest population control.

My boss does that. She traps stray cats and feral cats about twice a month. Take them to get shots and have them fixed (with her own money) Then she takes them back and release them where she found them.

Yep, I know lots who do that too. More and more farmers are doing this as well, even if it doesn't affect them as much as city cats, because of the # of kitties.

damn. kudo to her! but hey - better that than dealing with many stray cats roaming her neighborhood in the future.

exponential growth rate! :hyper::run:

I wonder how people know that the females are already spayed? I'd assume that the scar would be hard to see through the fur? Or is there another way?

there's not much fur on the private part. for male - you can see the little scar. :) but for female - it's tough so it's a good question you asked. the scar can be fully-healed or very difficult to see because nowadays they use super-glue to seal the incision. Here's a thing that what vet usually does for stray - they usually put a little notch on its ear.

A rather inconvenient way - keep her for a month and see if she gets a heat

Thats a good idea, im all for it! but it costs money, dont it?
unless the vets do it for free, then its all good!!
Here in this town, its pretty rampant, there are too many
stray cats, its just horrendous!!
So really, thats a great idea!!

nope! this procedure is quick and cheap - usually ranging from $50-100. Quite a handful of vets volunteer at shelters to spay/neuter them for free as well because it's funded by organizations.

My dog was $130. lol but yeah it's a lot cheaper than unwanted animals. ;)

The price I mentioned was from low-cost clinic. For "upper" clinic, yes the cost can run up to $300 depending on size/weight of the dog and their special medical conditions. What adds up the cost especially in your case is the medication and obviously a higher standard of care.

But yea - you could say that unwanted animals get minimal standard of care. snip and release! :)

Oh yes I think that is a super idea! We don't need more too many kittens and cats. I like that idea!

I should check out to see if my local area do provides as well.

oh ok, i see.
Still..if all vets would volunteer at shelters to spay/neuter all
dogs and cats, it would greatly reduce dog and cat population
of the world..

there is a lot of programs doing this. They have an RV where they drive around the states/cities to provide low-cost/free neuter/spay. But problem is..... the stray population is growing faster than the vets can neuter/spay. They're doing the best they can....

I wonder if someone made an algorithm in a computer program that simulates what happens if you euthanize 10% of the wild population vs what happens if you spay/neuter the very same 10%..... mmm *mumbles to self* use probability of breeding and then *mumbles*

PET PROJECT FOR ME?! :)

Mod's Note:

The thread is moved from On-Topic Debate Forum to Our Pets Forum since it relates to cats.

As for it being spayed/neutralized - It definitely would work big time because we see that with the dogs, with the cats, it would even make it better by having it under control.

But unfortunately - They breed faster than we are able to spay/neutralize them.

oh really? interesting...i never hear about this here in this
town or anywhere. Like i said earlier in my post, its rampant
here in this town so i doubt there is a program for spay/neuter
but they should! I never saw so many cats around here and im sorry
to say but a lot of people had to trap them and call animal control.
I hate that..its so sad.

The cats I was speaking of, live in Tampa, FL. Where my boss live.

Rural areas, where I live at... If we can trap 'em, Or own them. We can get Vouchers to have them fixed. Dogs or Cats.
