If I had to pick between the two, I'd go with a cat.

It's because I don't have to take them outside and they can use the litter. They don't require a lot of food and water. If I ever had to leave town on an emergency for a few days, I would know that I can leave my cat at home without worry for a few days.

I have friends who have dogs. My friends are always arriving late and/or leaving early so they can walk their dogs. When they go out of town, they have to find someone else to take care of their dogs for them.

I've lived with 5 dogs while growing up. I remember how I have to let them out all the time and that we have to spend a lot of money to take them to a kennel while we're out of town (or we bring them with us if it's a camping trip, which is rare).

If I did have to pick a dog, then I would prefer a small dog. They're easier to care for and usually live longer than big dogs.

I like both, but I prefer dogs. Dogs are easier to take care while cats are hard to take care. Cats tend to disappear for days, even weeks. My grandmother used to have a lot of cats, they would come to me not other people such as my cousins. When I would visit my grandmother, the cats would always run to me even they hadn't seen me in months.

Interesting, I see opposite as you.

I think cats are easier to take care than dogs...

I experienced both dogs and cats during childhood and love both dearly. I prefer cats over dogs due reason...

I can leave cats alone for all the day which dogs doesn't because dogs need outside for their businesses.

Cats use their businesses in litter box which dogs doesn't. I have to take dog for a walk 3 or more a day for their businesses and then have to pick their businesses up to threw trash bin. No matter either there're bad weather or not.

Dogs and cats need to take care of is brush their hair but dogs, you need extra time to work to do is dry dog's hair after walk due rainy...

I can get my neighbor to take care of my cats is just feed them and do litter box... while I go away for holiday but dogs? Neighbor would not have time to take care of dogs is walk, etc.

I like dogs. They always want to do what you want but cats want you to do whatever they want. Cats are very self centered. (I have two dogs and one cat}

I like work dogs. We always had two or three on the farm to work sheep and cattle. I don't care much for my sister's yappy lap dogs, but they are company for her and provide ears for her deafness.

I've always preferred cats, and have found Siamese to be a useful breed, as they seem to be guardians to humans they live with. Note I didn't say "their masters," because they feel humans are underlings.

I keep his food silo topped off, and he comes and goes as he pleases through a small door. Note I didn't say "pet door." For those considerations, he lets me know when someone is coming up the outside stairs. If the visitor is "our" girlfriend, he goes to the door to meet her even before the door bell strobe goes off.

I think my cat and I tolerate each other as semi-equals because we're both so independent.

LoL! It's my idea to make a thread to see everyone prefer cat or dog. I think it's fun to know about which is the best dog or cat or both.

For me. I do not mean to offend you. Just my opinion about cat. I like the dogs more than cats. Because dog can tell me when she can hear the doorbell. She will bark. She always wake me up. If she need go out for pee or poop. I will have a door with dog's small door go outside and come inside back and fourth. I don't have to worry about open the door and let dog go out then come back and waiting for me to open the door. I like to get my dog for walking and exercise. The dogs love to play with everyone. Some of breed that I don't like to have a shedding on my clothes and everywhere. I prefer to have a non-shedding dogs. I can get dog go travel on the road, go to lake, camping and etc. It depend on dog's breed with personality. I don't like to find a wrong personality dog.

I never have experience with cat in my whole life. My parents really hate cats. I learned about cats at my friends' house and my cousins'. The most of cats do have shedding which I don't like it. I came in the house. I can smell like cat's urine and poop in the litters. It's not care and clean very well. I can't stand to smell the litters with urine and poops. Cats always being snob and scare of guest people to come in. Some cat do like to near on guest people. It depend on cat's breed. I don't like the cat jump into the table, counter, cabinet, refrigerator. Cat do have a sharp claw to scratch on everyone's skins, ruin the couch's material, curtain, door screen and etc...

I am an animal lover but it doesn't mean that I adopt all animals in my house. I was grow up with dogs and cats and love them dearly. I prefer to have cats in my house because of less work to do and less stress. We travel a lot which is easy for neighbor to come to my house to take care of my cats but dogs?

It does the same with my cats as well. They tell me when they hear the door bell. Really funny thing, I never forget and thank to my cats for tell me... My youngest son tried to creep to kitchen for eat something at late night. Both cats from 2nd living room with us turn around and look straight to 1st living room. (dinning room middle between 1st and 2nd living room). We knew straight way something not okay at 1st living room. We saw him tried to hide sandwiches from us to creep back to 1st living room. He was like when he saw us... how? I told him that cats told me...

I can't trust to have small door for cats or dogs. IMO.

Yes I do like walk and ride the bicycle a lot but I really have no time to take a dog for a walk which I have a lot thing to do in house/garden and take care of boys... I can't leave dogs alone long 8 hours for go to work. I work full time which is not fair to leave dogs alone which with cats is no problem. They have their own litter boxes.

It's not just cats but dogs as well... Dogs could damage furniture as well if you didn't train them properly.

I trained all cats to not jump to table, etc and not scratch furniture. I trained them to use scratch posts and old arm chair in basement only. I don't declaw all of cats.

I don't declaw all of my cats. My personally opinion that it's cruel to declaw cats. It likely to chop fingertips. I educate my cats well like what I educate my boys as well.

It depend on dog's breed. It not all dogs could damage furniture. Yeah I did train to my dog how to not damage the furniture and other stuff. She always obey me. She never chew the stuff like my makeup, lipstick, and file. She used to chew off the carpet and old couch's under cotton. I put a repellent to prevent of dog's chew. It's very strong taste. It's taste terrible! She would never do it again. It was happen when she was puppy. Now she is 3 half years old. She is being good girl! I am so impressed about my dog never bite to anyone or me. Because I trained her to not bite anyone.

I prefer cats. I have a cat in my home and she is 2 years old. I am with some of you who say some cats are smart enough to alert its owner if someone is at the door. It is same with my cat who always run to the door and sit right by it to let us know that someone is at the door. On some weekends I like to go out of town with my family and I do not have to worry about my cat who is left behind at our home with plenty of water and food.
