I Want Him

I so badly want to steal away my "friend's" pit. He was the nicest and most strikingly beautiful dog I've seen in a long time. His name is Dyno. When I first saw him, he had two friends who bullied him, and all were very skinny. After lecturing my friend about his animal negligence, I noticed some improvement on their weight. The other two ran away one day, but Dyno stayed in the yard. Since I've known this guy he's always left his dogs outside, but I started bringing him in due to cold weather, and so he could interact with everybody and become a bit more docile and not so excited when we went outside. I taught him new things like sit, no, lay down, which I then told my "friend" how to enforce. I miss Dyno dearly. Everytime he sees me now, which isn't often sadly, he acts like a puppy running around crashing into my legs and nearly taking me out lol. We have a mutual understanding of each other, and he reads the expression of people. He does not fear me like he does my "friend" and others at times. His body language is entirely relaxed and I really miss my friend.

Dyno is the only deaf dog I've ever known. I just want the best for him, and he has so much potential. It bothers me seeing him misunderstood, and not being taken out on walks or on trips to experience new things. Ugh. So frustrating.

this is so sad..Is anyway you could have dog would he sell it to you?fact other dogs ran away makes your friend irresponsible and animal welfare should be called

Well, I don't have a place for Dyno just yet, but am currently working towards it. When I do I'll probably just shove money in the guy's face and walk out with my buddy.

As for the other dogs, they got out because the guy's brother left the side gate open. He claims to have called local shelters, but I know he's full of shit. Sadly, there's nothing I can do for them now.

Yea he does lol, only he's not so little... but that's okay too, he'll be my big ol' chi chi baby!! hahaha Thank you :)

Do you use hand signals for Dyno?
My dog is a rescue and she was very well trained so apparently whoever gave her up did take her or train her in obeidience. Well, I started using hand signals as I made commands and eventually quit being vocal ( with treats of course) and now she will do commands either vocally or by hand signals, its awesome and she is very smart. Zena is also a cancer survivor and is doing very well, great with my young son as well, she is very gentle. Zena has a happy home and family now here with us!

I hate it if animal not in loving home,if we breed them we got love them...hope it soon

Yes I did you hand signals.. It was tricky at first, I don't know how old he is exactly, but not too old. He caught on pretty quick after no. lol. That's really awesome to hear about your dogs :) Her color is definitely unique!! was it hard to teach her signs?

@ Caz12 - yea Dyno is also not fixed.. I think he'd be cool to breed, but there are already so many other dogs out there who need homes.

What do you guys think about passing along the deaf trait in animals?

I think there is no need to breed anymore dogs when there so many dogs getting killed everyday. I think it's a bad idea passing deaf trait on in dogs , they'll have a harder time finding a home and people could end abusing the dog b/c it's not 'listening ' to them . Look how some people get angry at you not 'hearing ' them . It's a horrible idea breeding a dog to get more deaf' dogs'
and not fair to the dogs . They do not give a crap about 'deaf culture'.

There's no guarantee for the deaf trait... but not only deaf dogs, but also cat's, and horses? I know they don't understand deaf culture, but are they not still part of it? Do we put ourselves above animals so much and see them even more so inferior because of deafness?

Personally I cannot. Deaf or not, an animal learns to survive, just as people do. Dyno was a stray this guy picked up from the middle of the road. I taught him some signs, and further educated his owner. Dalmatians are a popular breed for deafness. Should we stop breeding them because it is not fair; would you make the same argument for people? Or do we educate people on how to interact with them, like we interact with others? I have seen documentaries of deaf Dalmatians.. they still make great companions, but until Dyno have never truly experienced that connection.

Breeders often kill deaf dogs. And it is much harder for them to get homes.

I rescue deaf dogs, and they make great family members, but deliberately creating them is a bad idea.

They are often abused and turned in to shelters because they are harder to work with, and there are not huge numbers of deaf people jumping up to try to adopt the ones that naturally occur and escape being put down by their breeder.

Zena is OLD, but dont know exactly how old but she is gray'd...lol
It is common dog hand signals used in obeidience and dog shows ( my wife is a dog trainer and has show dogs (Havaneese)
Zena was following all hand signals within a week, we no longer do the training with her and she still follows all of them.

Sit - just cupping your hand and pushing it outwards from the waist.

Stay- Holding your hand out as if telling someone to stop.

Down- (also lay) just fan your hand gently downlwards towards the floor.

Free- ( release command ) like shoo-ing, simular to signing store, just loosely fan your hands outwards.

Speak- make your hand look like a duck bill and open it quickly with a slight forward motion

Roll over- just point your finger and make a circular motion.
I am currently working with her with this sign slowly converting to a gun and making her play dead when I finger shoot her... she is kinda catching on, depends on her mood. lol

Potty- just like signing toilet...also used for outside.

wouldnt be wise to breed, but also getting him fixed would curb ANY aggression or aggressive behavior.

if you dog lover and want best for doggie get it fixed don't breed...this dogs brothers sisters ran off prob ferral dogs somewhere.A bitch and pups hard work I think need be experienced with dogs before you breed

I'm not going to breed him, just was trying to get the topic going.

I don't know if it's really possible to intentionally breed deafness into animals, the gene may be there but may not show up for many many generations. Ahh genetics... how mysterious it can be!

Although Dyno isn't fixed, he's never shown signs of aggression toward people or other dogs, even when the female was in heat. Always patient and waits for his food. He's a pretty mellow dude :) As for the other dogs that ran off, i'm sure animal control was called. It's in an urban area and they're also pits :/ sad they're labeled as a "bully breed".

Pet Statistics | ASPCA

This is why I am against breeding more dogs or cats. We do not need more dogs or cats we do need more people adopt a pet from a shelter . It's irresponsible to bring more dogs and cats into the world when so many are getting killed each day or left to die on the street or in trash can stuffed in a trash bag. If a dog is born deaf find but to go out your way to knowingly
breed deaf dogs is insane to me. People are doing too far with this designer
dogs crap.

I think you are misunderstanding me here..

But since you brought up the stats, why isn't breeding animals all around banned? Deaf or not? Or law to neuter and spade cats, dogs, horses, rabbits, etc? I never said I was going to breed him. It was a cool thought. Not for deafness but for color, build, breed. Like horses are bred. Like cats are bred. Like rabbits are bred. Is that where you are getting "people are going too far with this designer dogs crap"? People breed whatever animal all the time, the fact that not all animals go to good homes is the PROBLEM. Cats, dogs, rabbits, horses, birds, reptiles. The issue is universal. It's not irresponsible to want to bring life into the world, the problem is the PEOPLE who are irresponsible and cruel who care less about takeing life from the world. I understand your passion for adopting, as people should be encouraged to look into shelters before buying from breeders, but you cannot enforce that. Instead wouldn't it be smarter to focus positive energy and better educate people about the proper care of animals (especially with animals who have special needs) to avoid these issues, rather than be negative about the inevitable fact that animals and people continue to breed?

Also, has anyone ever had an animal or known someone who had an animal they loved so much, they wanted to continue the animal's line by keeping their offspring? My friend had an amazing Australian shepherd, who's personality was beyond belief. He decided to breed the guy and kept a few of his offspring, and gave the rest away. Some came out with different traits, but one in particular had the same traits as its dad. Is this really considered irresponsible to want to continue a companion's line?
