Yes. Dogs are better at sign than speech . Although I speak to them also.
Joey the Pekingese is deaf, so sign was great for him. He has an eye disease that lots of Pekingese have, so his vision is pretty shot now, and we rely on foot stomping, and broad gestures close up. He is still doing great with that.

I have worked with deaf dogs before. Botti is very correct about dogs being better at the visual - that is their natural communication in many ways. They throw many subtle visual cues that other dogs catch but most people miss. |

I've started signing somewhat with my doggie, Anita....since she barks at everybody...I flap my hands and fingers at her...and call her "Miss Barkie"!....and to please shut up...hurts her little feelings I know. She's pretty good with verbal commands, but at the most inopportune times she will actually sort of drag her feet whenever I say "Come".....Seems she's getting a mind of her own some days.....

Dog gets $3,000 wireless hearing aid » News » The Daily Item, Sunbury, PA
Here is a story about a dog wearing a HA , the dog has a hearing test just like we do , in a sound poof booth. I wonder if the dog bark or cry when he hear a sound. |

I agree, CrazyPaul... not worth it for dogs to wear HAs IMO. They're already too expensive for humans, why spend that much on a dog that you will most likely end up outliving? I hope that doesn't sound too insensitive to people but come on...
Anyways we have three dogs in my family. My mom's the real "boss" of them - she does most of the training. But the dogs do know to answer to me as well. So far they know the signs for "Sit" "Circle" "Roll." Usually I do voice my "SIT" command with them though. I've also been clapping my hands or yelling out 'Hey' so they know to come to me. |

I've taught my Maltese dogs to sit when I sign to them but that's about it.
