Dogs Left Caged For Nearly 4 Years

Dogs Left Caged For Nearly 4 Years
Dogs Left Caged For Nearly 4 Years - New Hampshire News Story - WMUR New Hampshire

Quote:
LACONIA, N.H. -- The New Hampshire Humane Society said a woman in Plymouth who was unable to care for her dogs left them caged nearly all day long for at least the last four years.

Police confiscated the dogs late last month but did not charge their owner, who police said is elderly and suffers from a medical condition.

The nine dogs have made great strides since arriving at the New Hampshire Humane Society, but their medical problems are extensive. One dog spent so much time caged up over the last few years that he still has a hard time standing up.

"He's the dog that really tears at my heartstrings the most," said Marylee Gorham, of the New Hampshire Humane Society.

The 17-year-old Jack Russell terrier is named Napoleon.

"Over time, he has just become very crouched up and arthritic, to the point now if you see him standing, which is very difficult for him, he can't stand straight. He's kind of all crouched up and obviously in pain," Gorham said.

Napoleon and eight other Jack Russell terriers were rescued from conditions Humane Society workers described as unacceptable and inhumane.

"Some of them were not really able to be handled in the beginning, simply because they hadn't had a lot of human contact," Gorham said.

The shelter supervisor said that when the dogs came in, one named Buttercup was the most under-socialized.

"When you'd go in her kennel, she wouldn't go near you. We couldn't get her out of the kennel. She was afraid of the leash itself, and so we would just sit in there with her day in and day out," said animal care supervisor Gina Carita.

Despite significant health problems, which range from blindness in a dog named Betty White to a case of Lyme disease for one called Pisces, the Humane Society is hoping to adopt out each dog. One already found a home on Tuesday.

"They deserve good-quality homes where people can continue with their medical care, which will be ongoing in some cases," Gorham said.

While the former owner won't face charges, the shelter said it's important for anyone who knows of a situation like this to speak up.

"If you know that you have someone in your family who needs help or a neighbor is in trouble, or you know from conversation you have with somebody when you drop your refuse off at the town dump; people know these things. Don't be afraid to make the call," Gorham said.

The Humane Society said it is definitely in need of donations for medical care for the dogs.

Anyone who is interested can visit NHHumane.org and specify a donation for the JFT Fund.

Really awful!...Remembering this lady I knew that had 3 dogs in her small mobile home. A huge Black Lab and 2 Schnazers...she kept the male Schnauzer crated all the time....I finally did ask her "why" one day, as I felt it was abuse and even offered to take the dog. Needless to say, she became angry and soon after she gave the dog away. Better off, I say!

Wirelessly posted

Glad the dogs were rescued, perhaps the one will be rehabilitated to walk.
