I had my CI implanted on Nov; surgeon told me to wait 4 weeks; that's the standard procedure to give the CI area time to heal
My friend, who's a teacher; watched House; here is what she said "I watched it & wasn't quite sure what to think. It seemed that at the beginning they were going to explain a few things about the deaf culture & CIs. The creepiest thing was when the kid ripped out the CI...ewww. Oh...& the whole thing of them having him hooked up right after the surgery...not quite accurate! I was disappointed, though, that I ... Read More suggested that my students watch it & it ended up having exotic dancers throughout the whole show. That was NOT my intentions when I suggested it. I hope it doesn't come back to bite me in the butt...you know, some parent writing me a nasty note saying she can't believe I would have her child watch that type of thing.....I don't really have control over what they show on tv though." |

As a deaf person & cochlear implant patient from Champaign, IL; I have to say that I disagree with the show 100%:
1) it is PHYSICALLY impossible to rip out ($50,000) inner implant with your bare hands; even if you tried, it doesn't work. I tried that; unless you have a knife OR long fingernails, it just doesn't work at 2) it takes a special E.N.T. surgeon to do the implant - Chase & House just doesn't have the skills or the requirements to do that type of operation because you have to really read and understand the CT results and have to navigate to avoid the nerves, etc.. can't just do it on a whim.. 3) It is standard to wait up to a month after the surgery to give your body time to heal before turning on the implant - because the weekend after surgery; I got sick with dizziness issue... so that's why they have to wait a while... to iron out any "issues"... 4) to get that implant; total cost (including surgery and therapy) can be over $100,000 and the implants have to be on special order WEEKS ahead of time. You can't just have the CI on standby and install on a whim... the patient has to select what kind of brand, do some research, make an order, finish the insurance paperwork and then surgery.. that takes MONTHS to finish.. |

yeah same here. I was like "wtf, no no that's all wrong!" but then again, it's just a show. Kind of surprised me the inaccuracies in tonight's episode, when I know they do research and consult professionals to get illnesses and procedures accurate for the show. Did they just not find a CI surgeon to consult?

I am a very loyal House watcher...until now. But what he did...I know it's just a show...but it has put CIs in a very negative spotlight, much more negative than ever before. I mean, how many people watches the show? Millions. And what are they going to think? I know it isn't the first time the CIs has been put in a negative spotlight by a show, but this show is by far the most negative one surrounding CIs. I mean, if it was in actual real life and if I was THAT patient I would most definitely feel VIOLATED and I would SUE House AND the hospital for EVERYTHING House and the hospital has because it would most definitely violate all kinds of ethical regulations as well as medical regulations that ever existed. The patient may be under 18 but he is 14, most definitely old enough for the patient to make his own decision regarding CIs, and he already had asked that his hearing loss be left alone, but House went ahead and implanted him without anyone's permission, especially the mother's in the first place! House never even had the mother's permission in the first place!

I'm glad they did not use the brand of CI that I was implanted with...

This episode was pretty much downhill from the very start. You should have seen me. I was swearing at the TV. I'm pretty angry.

I don't watch it on tv much but I now did it last night. It s dumb. I was disappointed. There were outrageous inaccuracies and unprofessional behavior in the doctor. There is a lot of talk about Deaf culture which appears silly and irrelevant because of the overwhelming Hearing bias of the show.

I mean House has even "killed" some people purposefully to make them clinically dead for a few minutes "to check something"!!!! And you're upset about House not getting permission? Yea.. I don't think you watch House, sorry! |

Ryan Lane was indeed the star. And he's obviously not 14 years old.
