The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski

Born mute, speaking only in sign, Edgar Sawtelle leads an idyllic life with his parents on their farm in remote northern Wisconsin. For generations, the Sawtelles have raised and trained a fictional breed of dog whose thoughtful companionship is epitomized by Almondine, Edgar's lifelong friend and ally. But with the unexpected return of Claude, Edgar's paternal uncle, turmoil consumes the Sawtelles' once peaceful home. When Edgar's father dies suddenly, Claude insinuates himself into the life of the farm — and into Edgar's mother's affections.

Grief-stricken and bewildered, Edgar tries to prove Claude played a role in his father's death, but his plan backfires — spectacularly. Forced to flee into the vast wilderness lying beyond the farm, Edgar comes of age in the wild, fighting for his survival and that of the three yearling dogs who follow him. But his need to face his father's murderer and his devotion to the Sawtelle dogs turn Edgar ever homeward.

David Wroblewski is a master storyteller, and his breathtaking scenes — the elemental north woods, the sweep of seasons, an iconic American barn, a fateful vision rendered in the falling rain — create a riveting family saga, a brilliant exploration of the limits of language, and a compulsively readable modern classic.

Home by Marilynne Robinson

Hundreds of thousands were enthralled by the luminous voice of John Ames in Gilead, Marilynne Robinson’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel. Home is an entirely independent, deeply affecting novel that takes place concurrently in the same locale, this time in the household of Reverend Robert Boughton, Ames’s closest friend.

Glory Boughton, aged thirty-eight, has returned to Gilead to care for her dying father. Soon her brother, Jack—the prodigal son of the family, gone for twenty years—comes home too, looking for refuge and trying to make peace with a past littered with tormenting trouble and pain.

Jack is one of the great characters in recent literature. A bad boy from childhood, an alcoholic who cannot hold a job, he is perpetually at odds with his surroundings and with his traditionalist father, though he remains Boughton’s most beloved child. Brilliant, lovable, and wayward, Jack forges an intense bond with Glory and engages painfully with Ames, his godfather and namesake.

Home is a moving and healing book about families, family secrets, and the passing of the generations, about love and death and faith. It is Robinson’s greatest work, an unforgettable embodiment of the deepest and most universal emotions.

I have recently finished a stint of reading all 11 books of "The Sword of Truth" series. It's an epic fantasy series that's definitely not for kids. I thought it was very good and my attention was easily held through all 11 books.

I am near the midway point of Per Petterson's Out Stealing Horses and I have to say that this novel is truly worth your time and money. Wow! What a book!

The Road by Cormac Mccarthy is the last book I have enjoyed as much as Petterson's wonderful novel: Out Stealing Horses is just fantastic!

I'm sorry, it was supposed to be a joke. The title of the book is, "How To Be Happy Without Money", so if you don't have money, you can't afford the book.

I just recently purchased 2 books -

Amazing Grace by Danielle Steele

Playing for Pizza by John Grisham

Both books were good to read. Although, John Grisham's book was much better and had a lot of provoking thoughts in it.

Loved Playing for Pizza. It was the first Grisham that I've read. Finished a couple of Jeffrey Deaver and Patricia Cornwell books and a little Trek. Started an Arthur Conan Doyle biography last night. Could be just as interesting as Sherlock Holmes.

That's awesome. If you are interested in reading more of John Grisham's Books, I'd recommend you to read "The Client" and "The Chambers". Both are excellent!

I cant say how much good they are! John Grisham totally rocks with the lawyer books. My favorites happen to be "The Firm", "The Testament" and "A Time to Kill".

I recently bought the book, "The Eight". It was okay. My favorite book is The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy and The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.

If you like DaVinci Code grab Angels and Demons. I do prefer it to the DaVinci Code. Even better read "Digital Fortress" ..just take my word for it

And Tom Clancy? I recommend "Without Remorse" set in 1973 that tells the tale of John Clark and how he got into the CIA (and sets that up for the later Jack Ryan novels). Its my all-time favorite Tom Clancy novel.

Indeed, John Grisham rocks. My first Grisham book was The Rainmaker. After I read that book, I was definitely hooked on his books. So far as of now, I have 5 of his books. I still plan to collect more of his books down the road.

I just got President Obama's "The Audacity of Hope".

Think of it as a guidebook for the Obama Administration

Then we came to the end by Joshua Ferris. It's a National Book Award finalist so it should be pretty good.

AquaBlue,
Your early assessment of the Remains of the Day is right. A beautiful written, unforgettable story - enjoy! I am new to alldeaf.com, so you're probably already done with it by the time I posted this. The movie is brilliantly acted, also. One of those rare stories in which the writing and the movie could rival each other. One of Anthony Hopkins' best roles. Either way, the story will make you ache (in a good way).

My most recent book purchase was I Am A Soldier Too by Rick Bragg. It's the story of the young Army soldier, Jessica Lynch, who was captured then rescued early in the Iraq War. I'm not too far along yet, though. If any of you are unfamiliar with Rick Bragg, you should probably start with his other books:

The family trilogy he recently finished is, in order,
All Over But The Shoutin'
Ava's Man
The Prince of Frogtown

Read them in that order. No one can paint a picture of a person, a place, or a caste of people like Rick Bragg. These are can't-miss books. Let me know what you think. Oh, by the way, before he started writing novels he was a Pulitzer-Prize-winning feature story writer with various papers including the New York Times. It was his feature stories that won him a year's fellowship at Harvard after one! semester of community college in Alabama - yeah, he's that good.
