Read any good books lately?

Looking for something more modern, out of the comfort zone of the authors I normally read. I like science fiction, thrillers, spy stuff.

Check out the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. The first half of book one ("The Gunslinger") is a little dry, but it picks up really fast. It's truly an amazing series, it'll really make you think about our existence on a whole new level.

If you're not down for reading 7 books (5 of which are pretty long), you could always read IT. That's also a Stephen King book. It's good stuff.

Yeah, I've read most of the Stephen King stuff (even Richard Bachman) my sister is a big fan so I borrow her copies, Heinlein, I also liked the Ender's Game series. And read some Tom Clancy. I was reading Jack McDevitt, but couldn't get into them as much as I like to. I'm a pretty slow reader if I can't get into something.

There are some cute Star Wars themed books that you sci-fi fans should check out:

The Strange Case of Origami Yoda by Tom Angleberger.

Darth Paper Strikes Back by Tom Angleberger.

The Secret of the Fortune Wookiee
Tom Angleberger

Nota Bene: The last two books are sequels to the first book.

Check out Terry Goodkind. The Sword of Truth Series. I don't read much, but I read the first book about a year ago, and loved it.

I like Stephen King's books. There is one book that was turned into a TV show. That book is called "The Dead Zone." It is a really good read!

Hmm... I haven't actually read any books/novels since 1994!

The last book I remember reading is Jurassic Park.

I read the entire series. It's starts great!! big books, hope you like big books, I like a big book myself. But later in the series you might find yourself skipping a lot, I did. He gets very preachy, meaning he gets really repetitive, and goes on and on and on at times. He's very anti/communism/socialism, and that is threaded into the story and boy will he go on about it, without actually using those words. Me? I will stick with a series til the bitter bitter end. Laurell K Hamilton has a series, the Anita Blake Vampire Series I have stuck with for years. The first 9 or so books are seriously awesome and then the author lost her mind and was eaten by her own ego. She majorly sucks now but think's she's the bestest author ever and thinks she invented vampires. She's whacked, but I still read all her rubbish. I just have to know what happens.

Have you ever read any Harlan Coben? He writes mystery's and thriller. He's the boss. He has a series as well, about a guy named Myron Bolitar. I've only read a couple of the series, and not in order, hadn't realized they were part of a series until I read the second and recognized the character. But I've read a few of his that aren't part of that series, he is a great character writer, tight plot, and funny as hell.

Greg Isles is pretty good too, he doesn't stick to any one genre he's all over the place.

If you were a girl I could recommend some other stuff but you probably don't have enough estrogen to enjoy them

No I haven't read any of those. I hate it when I get a good book and then find out it was part of a series and it was from the middle or something. I liked Perfume. Despite the name, it didn't require estrogen! Maybe I'll cut off Goodkind when they start going down hill.

While I was working today I thought of another series, I really like series, The Game of Thrones Fire and Ice series. Have you read that? A lot of people disliked the 3rd and 4th...I liked them. There's a 5th one, that's on my kindle. Too bad you don't live closer, I'd let you raid my book case

I think I'd rather give myself papercuts between all my fingers and toes with the pages of that book than read any of them

James Alan Gardner's League of Peoples Series. (Sci-fi)

Seven books so far, each one a story in its own right, but it helps a little to have read previous ones.

Each one told in first person perspective of 7 different people.

Humanity has been introduced to interstellar travel by a group of hyper evolved races collectively known as the League of Peoples. They rule over the galaxy and they have only ONE law.
No dangerous non-sentient creatures can cross between star systems.
A dangerous non-sentient is defined by the league as any being which kills a sentient being or through willful negligence allows a sentient being to die. Any dangerous non-sentient that attempts to circumvent this law, or any being who knowingly aids in the attempt, is instantaneously but painlessly executed by the League. They always know, and they never explain. (We are to them what what a marmoset is to humanity, extremely lower evolved, barely sentient and not worth explaining things to.)

This effectively makes interstellar war completely impossible.

My favorite in the series was Commitment Hour. Every summer a village sends all children under 21 away for a short while, and when those children come back, they are the opposite gender. boys to girls, girls to boys. At 21, they have to commit to a single gender. or... become both.

I also loved Ascending from the same series.
