Uh-oh, HD is the best. Millions of us have HDTVs now. You need to know how to set it up properly like screen aspect ratio setting, etc.

I looked up what Telus offers. It sucks because there are few HD channels like you said before. For example, it offers news channels such as CNN, MSNBC, CNBC and Fox News but CNN is the only one available in HD. In America, they all are available in HD.

Your new HDTV's native resolution is 1080p. You need to set the screen aspect ratio in your STB, my recommendation is 720p so when the signal is sent to your HDTV, it will be converted to its native resolution, 1080p once.

If you are still not happy, why don't you move here in America?

FCC ordered local major networks like ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX to shut down the old system to be replaced by HD. In order to watch those major networks for free (over-the-air), if you still have an analog TV, you will need a converter box.

The Digital TV Transition: Buy A Converter Box.

All HD channels support 720p or 1080i but PPV movies on Directv is 1080p.

In some HD channels, they are still airing SD shows with enhancement, especially old shows like Laguna Beach and Rob & Big are SD with 4:3 that air on MTV as retro shows.

SD channels looks terrible and blurry on HDTV, that's normal.

I hate it when they stretch SD (4:3) programs. Makes actors' faces look smaller.

My FiOS doesn't offer 1080p in anything except probably 3-D.

ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, PBS and CW already WARNED WARNED WARNED you about analog shutoff in 2009 and there is no excuse if you are unaware because they already warned you.

Ok, I'll try to reply to everything.

I am not tech savvy, but smart enough to try out all the option on the remote, I will click and click and click click on whatever's there,
and see what happens, lololol
So I did figured out what's what and since last weekend I programmed and re-programmed the damn picture, sound, channels, options etc about maybe 20 times by now, lolol

I think I figured out (and forgot) every configuration that is there

And yes, Canada's HD TV sucks big way. BIG WAY. Now enough HD, for starters..

What happen is, I've noticed, if I record Jeopardy in HD the picture is fantastic but so what the CC suck. Not only these are behind, a lot is missing!
I don't have full answers, full dialogues, sometimes I miss the end of answer which drives me bonkers!!!
So I record in regular where the picture sucks but at least CC is whole. wtf?!?!

Now, suppose I record a movie on Move Channel HD 1 (MCHD1) at one time, then another movie at another time on MCHD2.

When I am watching pre-recorded movies later on, I see huge difference in quality - movie #1 have an excellent picture,
while movie #2 has a smaller screen (smaller than my old TV, dammit!!) and a picture is at times so dark I can hardly see anything!
-again- wtf !!!!!

Is it me-can't programm?, or is it the TV???? or is the cable supplier, or is it the station????

arrrgghhh !!!

whatever.

So far, I tried my best to fix the picture, using the Picture Wizard I programmed to our best like, and that's it for now.

Why won't I move to US? lolol I really wish I could. I can't because my disease -migraine - is very expensive.
My one medication alone cost me over 300 dollars per month easily, just one. Here I am covered. who'd pay for it in US??

Here's the best TV technology. Turn it off and take a walk or read a book. That's what I've had to do.

Are there other cable/satellite TV providers in your area or is Telus the only one? I am asking because if there are other providers, they may offer more HD channels than Telus. For example, in America, we have so many competitors such as DirecTV, Dish Network, Comcast, Charter, Time Warner Cable, Verizon FiOs, AT&T U-verse, etc.

BTW, read the manuals instead of books to become tech savvy.

Do you actually have an option with which cable provider to go use where you are? Everywhere I've lived you get the cable provider that serves that area or you get a dish.

Same here. I just found out that Charter is only one cable service available in my area but luckily Verizon FiOS is available in my area so I switched from DirecTV to FiOS more than 2 years ago. Time-Warner and Comcast are available in other areas nearby. I don't know why.

Ah Comcast is the only option we have for decent speed internet. DSL is slooowwwww where we are located. It would be too expensive to get internet with one provider and TV with another.

Cable and DSL services suck because they usually go down especially during VP calls with friends who have one of those services.

What about AT&T U-verse or Verizon FiOS? If not available in your area, I feel sorry for you. Wait and see if Google Fiber will come to your area in near future depending on your living in a city, town or country.

BTW, I assume that there can't be more than one cable company in one area due to FCC's rules so that way other competitors serve different areas equally.

ummm.. switching services - I don't think it will make a lot of difference, as I think it comes down to the which station broadcast in HD, and regardless of company these are the same here - I think ???

What matters is, what packages I can buy for what price from which company.

Right now it's Telus who offered us the cheapest bunch for the channels
we wanted and high speed internet, phone included, so it was a good deal.

but that was before we had HDTV.

Our contract will expire in the Fall, so yes, we will be looking at better possibilities. Thanks for great ideas!

I would like to explain fiber optics a little bit.

I had DirecTV for a long time. When Verizon FiOS came to my area, I immediately switched to it because I heard alot of good things about it. Oh, yeah it made alot of difference. I couldn't believe it with my own eyes. I always thought DirecTV was good until I got FiOS which is much better. In other words, fiber optics technology is the best so far. The other difference is that the coaxial cable is made of metal (copper) while fiber optic cable is not. More info on What is fiber optics?

If you don't have fiber service in your area, that's unfortunate. Cable TV service is better than nothing. I noticed that Telus also offers satellite TV service.

I want to point out that HD broadcasts have nothing to do with your HDTV's poor picture quality. If you have an over-the-air antenna to watch HD local broadcasts, you will notice that they look better than the ones from cable service. So if you actually have an antenna or plan to buy one, you can use it for local channels only and cable service for other channels. That's one of the ways to get better picture on local channels. It's up to you.

So.........CP, if a person wants to have "free" tv and not use any service provider, what antenna would you recommend.

I am not CP, obviously, but it depends so much on where you are located in relation to the nearest broadcast towers. Some can get good results with homemade inside ones or the digital version of "rabbit ears" while others, like my self that are many miles from the closest broadcast towers need a tower/antenna combination. Mine is a 30' tower (from the ground — not on the roof) with a 10' antenna pole on that. The antenna attached to the top of that pole is the Channel Master 4221HD. And then there is a booster as part of the system as well.

This link will help you to find the right antenna. You will need to enter your zip code and street address. Please follow instructions.

AntennaWeb

If you plan to install it yourself, a compass will be helpful for accuracy/precision. Don't forget to ground an outdoor antenna in case of lightning.

More info on AntennaWeb - Antenna Types

Jane has a good recommendation. I still have 8-bay Digital HDTV/UHF Outdoor TV Antenna-Channel Master CM 4228HD (CM4228) but no longer use it since I have FiOS TV.

OK, hope you find those informations very helpful and May the Force be with you!

Here's what is currently in our house. We have 2 TV's going with "rabbit ear" antenna and the converter boxes. If all is well and the planes are outgoing, we get approximately 60 channels in English and 7 in Spanish. If the planes are incoming, then we are down to 45 English and 3 Spanish. Either way, we lose the captions whenever a plane goes in or out.

FYI - the runway is 1 mile from my house.

No wonder and that airplanes would interfere with your TV reception for sure. I wonder how you can stand it. I can't live that way so a cable or fiber TV service would be a better choice for me because I don't want to miss anything at all.

MIL is too cheap for cable or anything like that. We are converting the garage next door to a house and will be having cable. Neighbors have said that the captioning is still scrambled and screwed up when planes go over. Personally, I read books, or for a few shows, I go to Hulu or Spreety and get them captioned.
