Runewriters Webcomic and Audism

There is a webcomic that features a deaf main character. It's too bad that the story focuses around her learning to speak. How annoying.

I think it really focuses on her gaining confidence and not live a protected life of seclusion just because she's deaf.

That's a positive. Of course I don't find anything wrong with deaf people voicing. I do it all the time.

I think that that is a positive message as well. But it still seems problematic. Voicing seems to become this ultimate way for this character to move on and become independent, which I think has troubling undertones. (Note: I've only read the first 7 pages so far.)

It's awesome to see a D/deaf main character, but I wonder what message this sends. I support voicing for whoever feels comfortable doing so, but voicing shouldn't be seen as the only way to gain independence.
