Do deaf folks consider themselves disabled?

No I never did. We were not on good terms and didn't speak for over 10 years until 2 years ago when I got a phone call that he was dying of renal failure. He lived in Florida and I live in Maryland so I flew down there to make peace with him before he died and it was nice to do that. i didn't...

Do deaf folks consider themselves disabled?

I would like to post what prompted this thread. It was from the other thread polling people about how much they get for their checks. That comment is why I started this thread. It has nothing to do with people who can't work. It has to do with people who CAN but don't feel like it.

Do deaf folks consider themselves disabled?

If someone said to me "I am not capable of working for you" then I would have to take them at their word. If someone who I might have pre-judged and determined to be incapable said to me "Even though you think I can't do this job I can assure you that I can do it AND do it better than you...

Do deaf folks consider themselves disabled?

Thank you!!!! That is exactly what I was looking for. Especially that last line. Couldn't agree more. Thanks for seeing the question and answering it without taking it offensively like others here.

Do deaf folks consider themselves disabled?

Are you people even reading what I'm saying or are you too busy trying to jump down my throat for asking a legitimate question? I NEVER CALLED ANYONE OUT AND SAID "anyone on SSI/SSDI is lazy and trying to game the system and get free money for doing nothing." Is this a forum where people can...

Do deaf folks consider themselves disabled?

Actually no. It did not have a "built-in assumption." It was a question. I certainly understand if people are having hard times and need help. I'm in that boat myself. The question was geared specifically towards the people who CHOOSE not to work when they are capable of working. Does that mean...

Do deaf folks consider themselves disabled?

I respect that response very much. The reason I brought it up was because of another thread where it was polling people on how much their ssi/ssdi checks are and some of what I read indicated that some deaf people are in fact capable of working but choose not to. I don't think that's fair...

    Grammar

Ever since I was in middle school I can remember my mom wanting me to proof-read her letters or anything that had to do with her grammar. I always understood because she writes how she signs. It's as simple as that. It doesn't mean she's stupid or uneducated, it simply means the grammar that is...

Do deaf folks consider themselves disabled?

The reason I bring this up is because I see many people who boast about the fact that being deaf doesn't make someone disabled BUT they collect ssdi checks every month. So what's the answer? Thoughts?

why do hearing people think they better than us?

I absolutely agree with you. I think many hearing people fall under the category of feeling sorry for people who they consider to have any sort of handicap whether it be blindness, deafness or any other issue which makes someone not be able to function with 100% ease in the world. That being...

why do hearing people think they better than us?

I don't think hearing people think they are "better" than deaf people. I think that word is not the right word to use. Being a coda, I have met many hearing people who are VERY enthusiastic about meeting my mother and other deaf folks and treat them with the utmost respect. Certainly there are...

    Pre-natal testing for desirable babies

I guess the bottom line is some people support embryo selection and some do not. Some people on here clearly support it while myself and some others do not. Obviously people get fired up when speaking of children and creating life. I sure do. I think this thread got thrown off the original...

    Pre-natal testing for desirable babies

What I'm saying is that if someone chooses prenatal testing to see if there are fatal defects and then chooses to terminate, I don't have a problem with that. If someone picks or chooses an embryo based on deaf or hearing or any other trait then I think it's BS. If someone has prenatal testing...
