Cultural Difference - Hearing and Deaf

I see this to an extent, but it's silly to generalize that all hearing people are like this when we have our own subcultures/ways of being as well, not all of us fall into the prim and proper category. I'm very open/blunt, as are my parents, and tend to get along best with people who are quite...

Petition against "dirty signs" book publishing

Let me just put this out there....she graduated from RIT in 2008, but has only been making videos since January 2011. I've seen no one from NTID say they know her on the ban dirty signs fb page (tons of NTID students/graduates on there). If she was learning ASL, my guess is she stopped a long...

    2 hearing families or 1

That's really awesome that her family is willing to learn ASL to communicate with you. My mom tries to sign to my fiance when he's not wearing his implant...but she mostly improvises or uses really old signs she's learned at work. Luckily neither of us is very family-oriented (neither are my...

Petition against "dirty signs" book publishing

I'm just passing along info. that I thought people here would be interested in and want to discuss. It's your choice whether you agree/disagree and want to sign or not. Don't agree, don't sign. Simple.

wind storms, power outages, rain in ohio

I actually passed a tree that had broken and crushed the bed of a parked truck yesterday! Pretty crazy, our storm only lasted about 20 minutes and caused a good deal of damage.

Petition against "dirty signs" book publishing

I haven't seen this on here yet, so I thought I'd share some links. Kristin Henson, the hearing girl who has a youtube account dedicated to teaching dirty signs is publishing a book, and there's a petition you can sign to stop her from doing so. Petition: St. Martin's Press: Do not publish...

wind storms, power outages, rain in ohio

I'm in Cincinnati. The storm tore one of our wisterias off the side of the house :( but we never lost power. Seems like you guys got it way worse in Dayton.

Is Anyone Presently Studying ASL online at LifePrint.com?

I use it...it's one of the most credible sites I've found, and the only one I really trust. I'll use aslpro/signing savvy to look up words sometimes...but I don't like them as much at all.

    How old are you guys?

    I probably love this.

    Deaf People and Autistic People?

Oh, well "relate to" can be taken any number of ways. I asked my fiance if the girl I work with and our friend who has Aspergers are easier to understand, and he said, "No, not at all." Based on the ASD folks I know/have worked with I would say their expressions are often misleading to what...

    Deaf People and Autistic People?

    Oh yeah, no doubt.

Hearing people who are attracted to deaf people

Oh ptooey to this. My fiance's uncle married a Russian woman who didn't speak English, and he didn't speak Russian. They've been married fifteen years. Obviously at this point they know each other's language! And also, my fiance has a cochlear implant and was raised orally but I learned basic...

    Deaf People and Autistic People?

I agree. I've seen several Deaf folks making fun of developed mentally disabled people :/. I always expect to see epistemic privilege kicking in, but that's not always the case.

    Deaf People and Autistic People?

Ohhhhh, I don't know about this at all. I am an aid to an autistic teenager...the only similarity I would draw between her and my fiance (who is deaf) would be the sense of isolation they've experienced in a mainstream school setting...the feeling of being left out of groups/not being able...

Any one on here from the Cincinnati area?

My boyfriend and I are moving to Cincinnati in a couple of weeks. He knows a few people from the area, but they are at NTID most of the year. We're both nervous about moving to a place where we'll have very few friends. Anyway, a little bit about us: he's 22, deaf w/ a CI (that he barely wears)...
