I will be banned again very soon, but I don't really care. The people here just attack me and the mods let them get away with it.

Hello Jasin. I read on someone's profile that you think its insulting for hearies to use sign when Deaf are not present. I just was curious if you felt the same about the growing use of BabySigns, when hearing infants are taught to use sign before speech?

I'm no doctor or audiologist, but I would defenitly say just based on common sense that 88% hearing loss more then qualifies as deaf.

Depends on which definition you go by. There is a cultural definition and a medical definition.

Culturally we are all deaf if we have some significant amount of hearing loss or some kind of illness that impeads our ability to hear. There is no difference in our deaf culture and anyone who tells you different is ignorant. Deaf is deaf in deaf culture.

Medically now its a bit different, most audiologist will not consider you deaf unless you are in the 70db range. Thats 70db or more of hearing loss on a scale from -10 to 110. That -10 is just above perfect hearing, no hearing loss of any kind. Dog ear type hearing!

The hard of hearing falls somewhere inbetween all that. Its enough hearing loss to not be considered hearing, but not exactly enough to fall into the range of what is considered deaf.

Also, there are a lot of audiologist out there who'll tell people they are hard of hearing because they still have a lot of residual hearing. They did it to me!! I guess they are trying to make some feel better. I don't understand that really.

what is the definition the detirmines between deaf and hard of hearing? My percentage of hearing loss is 80 and 88 percent. I don't feel like making a thread discussing this if it is simple. Hope you are doing well!
