I've never used Flash. My experiences are with Javascript, CSS, HTML, databases like MySQL and memcached, PHP, Java, and Python. I'm not willing to commit the time at this point until I've done more research into the cost. Do you think this forum would be a good location to find volunteers? I also would like someone on the team who has launched a successful startup before, someone with business experience. Any idea how to recruit?

Hey, so maybe you can help me find some resources.

Creating an awesome online ASL dictionary requires five things:
    1. A video database of signs
    2. A website
    3. A web interface to the videos, probably done through Flash technology (like YouTube)
    4. A distribution network
    5. A bunch people fluent in ASL to help out.

Item 2 would cost nothing as that's what I do.
Item 4 would cost money -- I'm currently awaiting a quote.
Item 1 would cost money and take a lot of time. If there are ten thousand signs and each takes ten seconds to get a good recording of, that's about 28 hours of recording. Compiling the list of signs and having a dozen signers from various regions of America could be expensive.
Item 3 would probably cost a few hundred dollars.

Do you have any advise for me?

lol, u died and came back as a deaf baby!
what are the chances of that? cuz oddly enough so did i. at approx. 8 weeks, not 8 months tho. - was born a bit premature, was in the hospital for a few months. one night i stopped breathing a couple of times and "died" but i was able to be revived (obviously) so maybe i came back as a deaf baby too?
