I have wanted to become one since i was 14 [now 20] and since I've graduated HS i still continue teaching myself, i want to get around the deaf community but its harder for me to find where they are or since my signing is still slow and minimal its difficult when i briefly meet someone, cause I'm usually at work. any ideas? i live near Seattle Washington. right now I'm gonna be going to school for financial accounting and then once i graduate with my degree just a associates, then i plan to go on to become an interpreter. It is my soul passion. i LOVE ASL. =] and the culture, and the people are great, all that I've met are soo friendly and nice its like were missing out by not being deaf is what i think sometimes. lol

I am learning to become one, yes. I have taken the EIPA once (still waiting for my results). Interpreting is basically my minor so I am still in the process of becoming one. You?

Wow that's not bad at all, yeah its FAFSA here too, I'm in Washington. i have gotten that far now all i need to do is go down to the school and speak with a financial aid counselor. so far I have taken 3 years high school classes and fell in love.=] i cannot wait to get started!
I'm in a bind though, maybe you can give me advice...so I'm working part time nearly full time and i just got my own apartment, with a roomie...so i need as many hours as i can. BUT i want to go to the school and get started, i could do a college class for like accounting or something RIGHT NOW, but my heart is with sign language and the community, it seems easier to do the online courses for the accounting,i think but i don't know if in the long run I'll regret not just jumping into ITP classes...what should i do?

    BTW I'm a believer too, =]
God bless you for your advice!

    Hi Catherine,

It's going well... so far. lol I did great last Spring semester, and am starting the actual Interpreter Training Program this Fall. It costs me about $500 per class, so I'm only going part time. Check into Grant money available. I don't know where you live, but here it's called FAFSA and your college Admin office should be able to help you thru that. You can also check here: FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid What ASL training have you had so far? Let me know how it's going for ya.

    God Bless,
    Lauren
