i quitted my job as stocker at walmart fot 14 1/2 yrs. my husband had transfered his job up north in michgan. he want to be close to his family and he's going to retire next year. it's small town, he drove 1 hr to work 4 days a week. there is walmart and that is only 40 min away. the winter is bad and we only have one 4-wheel drive jeep. there is no job available to apply due to my hearnig impaired. all is food places, vedio and other required phone service. it's really suck. i am not upset about the move. just that we lived in country now and it's different than in city we lived in. so i thought, should i apply for SSI ? my husband is normal hearing.
i should apply for unemployment ? even thru i haven't been working for 5 mths due to moving up north. we used our own trailer to move stuffs, every 2 weeks. my friend told me i have to work for 2 mths up here, and then quit. well, where can i get job if there no job opening ? thank for your help . |

unless you have been working that did pay SS taxes to see if your quarter is enough to be insured then you may apply for SSDI, not SSI. However, disability determine service will decide based on your hearing level to see if you are deaf enough to be eligible for SS disability aka SSDI. It won't hurt for you to go to your local SS office and ask lots of quesitons, and be sure to let them know that you are married and your husband has a job. So they would know more about your history and your work history too. good luck .

if you work for 14 yrs at walmart. More likely, you did pay SS taxes. I suggest you to go to your local SSA and ask them to see if your quarters is enough to be eligible for SS disability (aka SSDI) NOT Social security incomes aka SSI.

I strongly suggest you to see your local SSA real soon like today. The SSDI claim takes 60 days to process it to make a final decision. However, SSDI has a 5 months waiting period after the effective date of your disability and last day of working which means it won't pay you during the waiting period. For example, you stopped working on jan 2009 then it will pays you in july 2009. That's why i encourage you to see your local SSA real SOON.
Yep, I love cats very much. I wish i could feed stray cats or take care of homeless stray cats but we have two kids to focus on, once they get older. We probably adopt more cats. hehe we have three cats already. |

14 years working at wally world, your pretty much in luck for SSDI, but the process is not 60 days, it is 6 months, and FYI no longer will back pay for the first 6 month, they stop doing it few years ago.
About SSI, you are overqualified and do not bother with SSI because your hubby is working. SSDI will have no effect with your husband work because it is your own disability insurance not husband so they kept it separate.

Understood, what I mean is that the process itself from the first day of application to the first check takes 6 months. The final decision within 60 isn't really final decision, they can change their mind anytime between 1st day of application until first SSDi check.
Their system is pretty much corrupted as far as I know. Quote:

That's correct. It's not easy for those disability determine service people to keep on tracking of claimants' cases to make decisions based on their disabilily. |

A word of advise... ask for ASL interpreter, failure to ask for one increase the likelihood of having decision to award SSDI denied.
Reason behind this if they see that you can talk with them without terp, it would show them that you are not really disabled and reject your application. Have I seen that happened? You can bet on it. Please note, this advise applies only if you apply because you are Deaf. For other disability like blind, loss of limbs, etc. forget that advise.
