Why would you have injections? What is it for? You do know that Gentamicin is VERY otoxic??

I know in severe severe cases of Menieres they do that but I couldnt see myself taking it as it damages so much in the ear. And if that is the case I am very surprised you would even consider it because you are so new to the disease if I am correct?

Please I really need feed back!!! Has anyone had Gentamicin injections? What was your experience like? Tell me about your recovery. PLEASE! I am getting my first injection April 2nd.

I don't have Meniere's, but I gather you must be so dizzy you can't stand up?

I have read studies and the intratympanic injections are safe, but usually have to be repeated in about one year as it comes back.

But much safer than laborinthectomy .

Gentamycin is an antibiotic given to fight moderate to severe infections. It is usually given by IV and as someone already said, it is VERY ototoxic. I was given this med twice for infections and had to have blood levels drawn while under treatment to make sure I was getting enough of the medication to fight the infections, but not too much that it caused severe side effects like hearing loss and kidney failure. It's a risky drug to take, but if you need it, it can save your life. Just make sure you know the risks and benefits before consenting to taking this medication.

It is supposed to do a little damage although this does not say so. Tje damage is what helps with dizziness. It is supposed to be very effective. It is fairly standard treatment.

I personally would never use gentamycin. That is actually what caused my hearing loss when I was a baby.

It is often correlated with the permanent side effects of balance issues and dizziness. I'm not sure how it is used for treatment of Meniere's, but I just wanted you to know that it is one of the mycin family, so it is very ototoxic, like the others have said. Please be wary of the mycin family--it has affected me and others, too. I do not have any of the other side effects from it, just hearing loss, but still. Be careful.

One of those things where the benefits must outweigh the risks? I am now taking a drug that is mildly ototoxic because the infections did not respond to other drugs. Talk to your doctor about your concerns. Your doctor is the best source of information. If you must seek advice on the 'net bet sure to use a very reliable source. Good luck.

When you create a thread, give it some time.

If you feel the thread needs to be updated, then "bump" it by posting within your own thread. When your thread gets pushed down, it's not always because someone created a new thread. It's because there's another thread with a newer comment. The threads are in order by recent comments, not only thread creations.

What do you need Getamicin for? What kind of infection do/did you have.

Gentamicin is extremely effective against certain bacteria because it is a protein desynthesizing antibiotic. On standard testing against general species of non-pathogenic E. coli and S. aureus, it is as effective as penicillin and tetracycline in the treatment.

But this doesn't look at any health risks or side effects involved.

Look up how it is used for treatment of Meniere's disease. It kills part of the ear to help stop the sickness.

In her case it did not work and she had a labyrinthectomy.

Even though this thread is so old, I'm just now finding this. I'm curious to how many people have taken Gentamicin for an infection while doing home dialysis? I have been partially deaf for about 7 years now and just to typ that I had to think and I'm surprised it's been that long.
Once doctors found out that Gentamicin did this to me and seeing how quickly it happened which was within a couple months of taking it, doctors said that by the end of that year I would most likely be completely deaf. Well, I'm stubborn and I told that doctor he was wrong! It's now 7 years and as of a few months ago I have lost more hearing but rapidly I'm down to 35% hearing and understanding WITH both hearing aides and Cochlear was suggested to me recently and I'm going through the testing for it now. I am now kidney transplant for the last three and a half years and now that I have lost more of my hearing it's really pissing me off that a medication did this to me and I myself have sat back and not done more to find out how the manufacture can get away with making my life this way. Anybody ever done anything legally about the manufactures who makes this med?
