Aspartame: Bad or Good for You?
Aspartame Information
FDA: Is aspartame safe for you? Aspartame Toxicity Info Center I just want to bring this topic to attention (not sure if this should belong in the general discussion forum but do whatever is necessary to put this thread in the proper places, please Mods )Apastame is basically a chemical that is being used in diet sodas to keep the flavor with no calories attached to it. Few months ago, I did receive an email, let it be a hoax or not, regarding with Diet Coke being the soda with highest numbers of apastame used in the drink and that the chemical have unfortunate side effects such as headaches, eye diseases, and this horrible effects are listed endless... So I was little concerned because I read on those sodas and Aspartame is on the list. I don't understand why people are sending out those type of terrorist emails regarding with the chemicals so I went further to research those online and I couldn't find anything SOLID that it is safe but only by Aspartame where they claimed their products are safe (of course they would say) and I cannot find their supporting information at FDA or other places where they claimed their evidences were from. I got suspicious about this so I would like to discuss this so-called "bad" chemical in diet sodas. I am worried about this because I dont want to screw myself up, chemically (ie: leading to mental illnesses or whatnot in the future) but I dont want to go back to sodas where all of those bad calories go straight to my hips. I need my caffinee intakes and I don't like coffee. SO basically this is a cry of help. I just want to know if anybody knows about aspartame in the diet sodas and what stories have they heard about this, et cetera. Debate away~ don't forget to support with evidences... No heresays please! I dont want anybody to learn false information or whatnot. I just want a team to help investiaging this serious issue because ... almost everybody in AD do drink those sodas, right? I SAID ALMOST, not ALL so get down, boy(girl).... |

Email? Then it's fake. It's already been fake. You should read the first link you posted. It says that this story is a myth. You shouldn't believe what you read in emails... unless you actually read it in a newspaper or magazine.

When in doubt, just ask Uncle Cecil:
http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a961129.html The bottom line is that you can consume aspartame until it’s coming out of your ears and it’s not going to do you an iota of harm. Aspartame is nothing more than a dipeptide: a combination of the two amino acids aspartic acid and phenylalanine. Both of these chemicals are ubiquitous in nature and are present to some extent in virtually everything you eat. |

Aspartame is found not only in soft drinks but in chewing gum and almost anything that uses it as a sugar substitute. I've found it in chewing gum that uses sugar as well, so watch out for those too. Only a small amount shouldn't hurt, I still chew gum, but I try to limit my soft drink intake. It shouldn't be too much of a problem. Is drinking normal sugar another solution? If not, I'd suggest just limiting how much you drink per day.

I think everyone is just being paranoid with this asspartme thing. It's in a lot of things and is part of our lives. We can't go running around going "OMG! It's gonna give us cancer!" Sure, everything gives us cancer... it's just a matter of how it's consumed. I smoke only one cigarette in my entire life. Does that mean I'm gonna get lung cancer immediately from that? Hell no! If I smoke 2 packs a day every day for 5 years, I would definitely get lung cancer quickly. The same for aspartme. You have it in your drink and food for a day, that's fine. You sit there with a huge pitcher full of only aspartme and drinking it one after another... 5 gallons worth, you'll definitely start developing cancer that way!

Also, my family doctor informed my family that we are genetically inclined to develop some type of cancer and was told to eat a good diet and avoid "possible" cancer-inducing foods. Does that make me "paranoid"?
