Difference between a Cold and H1N1 Flu Symptoms

Know the Difference between a Cold and H1N1 Flu Symptoms:


Fever

Fever is rare with a cold.
Fever is usually present with the flu in up to 80% of all flu cases. A temperature of 100°F or higher for 3 to 4 days is associated with the H1N1 flu.



Coughing

A hacking, productive (mucus- producing) cough is often present with a cold.
A non-productive (non-mucus producing) cough is usually present with the H1N1 flu (sometimes referred to as dry cough).



Aches

Slight body aches and pains can be part of a cold.
Severe aches and pains are common with the H1N1 flu.



Stuffy Nose

Stuffy nose is commonly present with a cold and typically resolves spontaneously within a week.
Stuffy nose is not commonly present with the H1N1 flu.



Chills

Chills are uncommon with a cold.
60% of people who have the H1N1 flu experience chills.



Tiredness

Tiredness is fairly mild with a cold.
Tiredness is moderate to severe with the H1N1 flu.



Sneezing

Sneezing is commonly present with a cold.
Sneezing is not common with the H1N1 flu.



Sudden Symptoms

Cold symptoms tend to develop over a few days.
The H1N1 flu has a rapid onset within 3-6 hours. The flu hits hard and includes sudden symptoms like high fever, aches and pains.



Headache

A headache is fairly uncommon with a cold.
A headache is very common with the H1N1 flu, present in 80% of flu cases.



Sore Throat

Sore throat is commonly present with a cold.
Sore throat is not commonly present with the H1N1 flu.



Chest Discomfort

Chest discomfort is mild to moderate with a cold.
Chest discomfort is often severe with the H1N1 flu.

When I got it over a month ago, I experienced only these symptoms..

chest discomfort

rapid onset of symptoms

and a non-productive cough


I was surprised that I had no fevers nor aches.

And Swine (H1N1) flu do have vomiting and diarrhea.

I got my COLD flu vaccine last Oct 6th. and I got H1N1 vaccine for pregnancy last week on Tuesday. Thank god! I never see the people with swine flu wear surgical masks. I heard my friends warned me and other people about swine flu is in our hometown and state. They made status on Facebook.

I have one friend died of Swine flu and pneumonia last June 2nd. And other my friend was victim of swine flu and pneumonia. He was battling with infection and stayed in the ICU for 4 weeks. He is home now. He is lucky.

My mom in the law got cold flu She thought it was swine flu. She took the test result is negative. And other my friend's daughter's doctor thought she had swine flu positive but good news she didn't get swine flu. She had cold flu. Thank god! And other my friend's son is 2 and had minor of H1N1.

My husband got H1N1 flu last week. He didn't experience with vomit or diarrhea. It just headache, fever, coughing, sore throat, runny nose, chill and body ache.

His doctor said he don't have pneumonia. Thank god! He is tail end the H1N1 yesterday. He is getting better today and go return to classes and work.

Pinky, I'm sorry that about your friend who died and your friend that was so critically ill. Glad to hear that your hubby is getting better. I'm glad that you got the vaccine. Take good care of yourself.
