True, but someone who is truly living green will not use disposable diapers because of the plastic coating and the fact that they create trash. They would use cloth diapers, wash and re-use them, just like in the pre-Pampers days.

Give clothes in good condition to thrift stores. Clothes in bad shape can be used as rags. I collect old jeans and cut out useable cloth to make a denim quilt. I finished the top layer and now need to work on bottom layer as I want to make it reversible. I love denim. I can use the leg part to make a bag. Once I made a cloth-pins holder out of the leg part. I don't have that but I can make another one if I go back to hanging the laundry outside. I will have to figure out where I can put them without offending neighbors.

I like to use old clean cotton underwear/sock to stain wood before throw it away. That is why I try to buy cotton underwears/socks. Cotton bras are harder to find.

Funny! Did you know that there is a cemetery where they can be buried in wicker coffin (not wooden) or shroud. No tombstones/markers but you can find your loved ones via GPS.

Yep, Nothing is 100% perfect.

It just fathoms me to know how bad it could be when you don't know if it has been cleaned or not. (not directing it at you though but generally speaking of)

I was thinking - You know, way back before the plastic bag came in the picture, we all had to use the brown paper bag for groceries, etc. Whenever it is soaked by some leaks from meat, milk or whatever it it is, it falls apart. We throw it away after we use it or if it is in a good condition, we use it again. I have to wonder, is it even healthier to use a paper bag instead of plastic bag or reusable ones? Maybe it isn't but then again, it was not always reliable for carrying heavy loads that were packed in the bag.

Any one been to the EcoDeaf site yet? It's cool.

I wash my shopping bags. I also have cloth napkins. Wash those with the towels. Makes a nice full load once a week. No need for dryer, just hang up in the sun. Smells nice. I use one roll of paper towels every 6 months or so. Sigh. Yep, I put them in the compost. Oh, gee, I guess - oh no - I am (pah) an OLD HIPPIE!! hahaha

I, a treehugger still use plastic bags because I can use it for garbage in my car, use for other stuff I need it for. I think it's generally cleaner than using a re-usable cloth bags, so it's no win situation anyhow. I don't find any use for them.

I prefer plastic bags because they are easier for me to carry. Cloth bags are made of a heavier material which would make them more difficult to carry when I'm walking home from the grocery store -- not to mention the fact that I really don't care to have something else to throw in the laundry every week.

As the person working behind the counter I can tell you that those little blue reusable bags from walmart are useless. They are a hassle to put on the carousel, and if they dont have the little loops on them to get them to stand up via the bag hooks, then it takes twice as much time and effort to load and pack your groceries because we have to fight the bag to make it stay open.

The blue bags are the DEVIL!

Oh yeah, what about those do-it-yourself check-out lanes?

How will you handle those?

If you put those re-usable bags on there, it will say that you need to remove the item and scan it first.

You could scan your items and select "Skip Bagging", but that can only be done a few times before you end up having to have the employee override it.

Only a CSM can override anything on a register, the cashiers are just there to do the scanning and bagging for the customer.

Our Wal-Mart doesnt have a self-checkout lane so I'm not sure about the 'remove item and scan it first'. I would suspect that the computer/camera believes its an item from the store not from the customer's home. Technology is nice but it ain't perfect.

Judging from what you said - there is a way around the scanning - place bag down when the prompt comes up - lift the bag up and scan your first item then set it back down with the item in the bag.

Few US cities, such as SF already banned on plastic bags and plastic bag ban in LA will effective in July 2010.

L.A. City Council votes for ban on plastic shopping bags - Los Angeles Times

You have use reusable bags or request for paper bags with small fee, you choice.

I am not surprise! I have re-useable bags and plastic bags. I am sick of extra plastic bags from grocery. In my opinion the meats need to use brown paper wrap like Meat Deli's brown paper bag instead of plastic and re useable bag with bacteria. Meat and produce need to be separate. Do not put any chemical, bleach, and bounce sheets in re useable bag. The chemicals must be separate from meats and food.

Shel, LoL you're funny! You smelled your bag. Are you a RAT?? JK

I prefer plastic bags because of easier to grab more bags or use for trash.

If you have tons of paper bags then it could cause problem with cockroaches, I remember about back in early 90's and we had alot of paper bags from grocery store and I noticed more cockroaches are occurred but much less today because almost rest of stores use plastic bags.

I can grab as much as 10 full plastic bag of groceries at same time, from car to home.

Eeek! I have 7 of reuseable cloth bags and they do really help.... it carries more food and it detuct some of the money off of your grocery bill! Everytime I shop at Top or Fred Meyer or Winco, and I bring those bags, they always detuct the some of the money off the total of the grocery because I brought my own bags, not using theirs!

But Now they're saying it's bad for you? Oh when will it ever end???

Women pocket books can get dirty too! We put on the floor or ground all the time and they can pick up germs and bacteria! I read we should not put our pocket books on the our tables or kitchen countertop! How would we wash a leather pocket book or one that leather on it and not have it mess up?

This is what I was always taught about using my white cane as well. This is due to the fact that the cane tip may have been exposed to a variety of bacteria that are unknown to the person using it. Whenever I have something in my hand, I place it inside my purse or backpack (if it's small like a wallet) or on the floor (if it's large like my cane). I tend to be very anal when it comes to things like that given how obsessive my late mother was about cleanliness.

Same here. I also like to use plastic bags to clean up after Tigger. At one time I used sandwich bags and placed them inside a paper lunch bag, but it's much eaiser (and more sanitary) to use plastic instead.

Not only do paper bags create more problems with roaches, they also are impossible to carry when they become wet or moist.

A grocery store near my home has self-checkout and the system works pretty well to a certain extent. Every now and then, one must rescan an item that wasn't originally picked up by the machine in the first place. As a result, a clerk must type in a certain code (I'm unable to see the screen, so I can't describe how this works specifically) before it will accept additional items that are scanned.
