You need to talk to your doctors about your meds.

I have seizures too. Try asking your doctor about Clonazepam. You can take that prn (as needed) and its very strong stuff. The stuff is almost as strong as ativan, as far as stoping a seizure goes, which is what they typically give you in the er when you are having a seizure or they need to prevent you from having another.

Ativan (Lorazepam) is in the class of medications known as benzodiazepams (Valium is in the same class) . THey work by changing the electrolyte channels in brain cells to depress brain activity . At low doses they do in fact decrease "anxiety" feelings. However at slightly higher doses they will change enough of the channels to "stop a seizure". Many drugs that were developed as anti seizure drugs are currently now used to help psychiatric conditions (Depakote, neurontin, Topamax, etc.) Since they were developed to "get into the brain" to stop seizures , it is not sucha a stretch of the imagination to think that they also "get into the brain" to help psychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar, etc. Hope this response is helpful
How does ativan stop a seizure? - Yahoo! Answers

Ativan in higher doses helps with seizures too. It is not only to calm you down.

Jason, Klonopin (clonazepam) isn't that strong of medication. If a patient is having an acute seizure activity in the hospital or ER, Valium or Ativan is what is most likely to be given. Valium probably 90% of the time. Clonazepam cannot even be administered IV. The relationship it has to seizure activity is same as anyone taking benzodiazepines long term. If taken long term and you stop taking them suddenly, you may experience seizure activity if susceptable to them. There are much more appropriate maintenance medications to take when sufferring seizure disorders.

Clonazepam is not Ativan! Please do not confuse these drugs as being the same drug. I was just merely analogizing and nothing more.

Clonazepam is a very "highly potent anti-convulsant". The drug does, after all, inhibit synaptic transmission across the central nervous system.

Medications are given intravenously, as in the case of some anti-convulsants, because it is a faster method of getting a drug into the blood stream not because the drug being administered is more potent then another.

You are correct! Its not just a muscle relaxant. Besides, its main use is as an anticonvulsant.

Are you trying to educate me or prove a point with something? Please don't presume that there is anything about ANY drug that I cannot rehearse a lecture without any "sources"

Just pointing out that your statement about Clonazepam is wrong.

Ativan and Klonopin are both benzodiazepine tranquilizers. They are also both used for a myriad of reasons; seizure control being one of them. Ativan is more widely used for acute seizure; whereas klonopin is more widely used as maintenance, I believe.

At any rate, neither med is necessarily superior to the other. They both are good for what they are prescribed for. But, besides that, NONE of us really should be recommending medications as NONE of us are doctors.

Ahh, but you are talking about something entirely different. You are not addressing the strength of the drug, which is what I was doing as he clearly stated clonazepam "isn't that strong".

Therefore, my statement(s) about clonazepam being a "highly potent" drug, which is a fact, is still valid and he is still clearly wrong.

No, he wasn't. Potency has nothing to do with it. It has to do with the use of the med. Ativan is used for acute seizures. If you come to the ER seizing, the doctor isn't going to mess around trying to get clonazepam into you when all he has to do is run an IV and give you ativan.

I'm not going to debate this with you, though. To tell you the truth, I think you're being a bit egostistical trying to argue with someone with the medical training to know what he is talking about.

Just my two cents. Now, I'm out.

MedlinePlus: Medical Dictionary

From the merriam-webster dictionary:

Main Entry:

I take Clonazepam (for my bipolar) and from what my psychiatrist told me, this med is potent, but isn't one of the strongest benzos available. If I remember correctly, it's either the third or fourth most potent out of all of the bezos that are prescribed.

As far as Clonazepam and Ativan are concerned, Ativan is a fast-acting med. It works much faster than Clonazepam.

However, Clonazepam has a longer half-life meaning that it stays in the bloodstream for 8-12 hours.
