My youngest son went to the ophthalmologist to get his visual exam. It turns out that he has convergence insufficiency. This term is new to me and I learned that it is also common with children and adults with ADD/ADHD.

Is anyone else familiar with this? If so, I'd like to look more into it.

I have this, but didn't know it has a name. Ever since I was a teenager, my eyes would get blurry when I was reading or doing computer work. I have a prism lens in my glasses but never knew what the prism was for. Now, I do. I also have ADD.

I'm sorry I can't shed any more light on this beyond what your link said, except to let you know that I probably have the same disorder. I guess we'll learn together.

Convergence Insufficiency

Thanks for that link Jill. I had known very little about this and am always gracious for these opertunities to enhance my areas of weak knowledge. I would love more medical related topics where I feel less competent in and can deepen my knowledge base. With my obcession of medical datas and JAMA publishments, I always seek to be more well versed on a topic than the previous day. I never know if it is to make a difference tomorrow or ten years, but I believe every morsal of knowledge accompanied by the appropriate clinical experience, can only help a positive outcome for patient or resolution of a problem that appears unsolveable.

Sorry about my short tangent, but I appreciated the topic that was brought up and the stimulation of my curiosities.

You are quite welcome. I found the link when researching some of the secondary complications of ADHD, and found it to be very interesting. I had not been familiar with this syndrome before I discovered that there is a high incidence of comorbidity with ADHD.

A applaud you for continually seeking to become more informed. Learning is a lifelong pursuit. It is a journey, not a destination.

That's all right. I'm glad this was brought up because otherwise you might would have not known about this. That's something we all together can look into. I do also have prism lens in my glasses as well. I also didn't know what was the purpose of the prism until I learned about this too. I don't have ADD or ADHD, myself. My eyes would get blurry and sometime I'd have double vision whenever I am reading or watching the closed captioning on TV. The weird thing is, When I'm on the computer, I've had no problem with that. Often, I'd squint or rub my eyes to relieve the blurriness. Ever since I've had my eyeglasses, it's been a BIG help.

I had noticed my youngest was also doing the same thing and he often complained about headaches. Originally, I'd have thought he might just need something else but I never had any idea that convergence insufficiency is also part of the secondary complication of a person with ADD/ADHD.


Thanks for the link, Jillio. That was a BIG help and a lot more detailed. I, too, was not familiar with this and had no knowledge of this until yesterday and that is when I learned of this.

I wonder if it's possible to be very near sighted and yet have convergence insufficeny?

I hadn't known that people with this disorder tend to have lots of car lot parking accidents and I've always known that I seem to have depth perception problems..


I've several comorbidities that go with ADD... I don't need yet another one.
