I have been having problems with Dairy Products and other things as well.
I have switched to Lactose Free milk and even bought Enzyme Pills. They don't always seem to work. Will seeing a doctor be worth it? I mean, will the doctor just tell me to avoid the offending food or will the doctor provide me with information? I have a problem with other foods as well, so it may just be IBS. I have been thinking about going to the doctor. I don't know much about living lactose-free because I use milk for my oatmeals, use cheese for sandwich. Mayo for my tuna. I mean, I will probably have no food to eat. I don't want the doctor to just tell me to avoid food. I really need to know how to find ways to eat differently. It's really lame to live on Enzymes pills because the cost really adds up. It cost more than milk itself. Ugh! It's an annoying problem for a few years now. I think I know what may have caused this intolerance. I may have IBS. I basically have dairy stuff with my breakfast. What will I eat? Anyone Lactose Intolerant offer advice? |

Going to your Dr would be the first step. There are meds that can be prescribed for IBS (if that is what you have). I also suffer from it. I don't really avoid anything, except spicey foods. I have the constipating variation of the disorder. There's also mixed where you have both, and of course, the " oh so lovely" diarrheal variety.
What *I* do is eat foods high in fiber and that helps regulate me. Some people also take a bulk forming laxative, which can help. There is also a medcation called Zelnorm that can be prescribed. If you struggle with knowing what foods to eat/not eat, you may want to consider asking for a referral to a nutritionist who knows about intestinal disorders like lactose intolerance and IBS. Good luck! I know dealing with either disorder is no fun!

Hello ClearSky, My mom has IBS either. Last January, I was very illness for 15 days. I told my fiance to got me an emergency room. I had an abnormal serve pain so badly. The er doctor gave me a morphine inject into my IV. It help stop pain. He asked me what is my rate of pain?? I told him it's 10. My fiance was worrying about me. I had been sick. I threw up a lot and diarrhea. I went to CT Scan for my tummy. ER doctor found it about my colon had swollen. He said didn't know why. He sent me into room for inpatient. I stayed there for 7 days.
I can't eat anything. My diet was clear liquid. It's so suck! My GI doctor found it out. I had an ulcerative colitis. The dietitian suggested me to eat a diet. I can't eat Fiber over 10 gram for a while. I can't eat any seed with raw fruit and vegetables for a while. Also, I can't drink dairy product and alcohol for 2 weeks. I got out of hospital. My fiance and I went to supermarket to look for a health with lactose-free at dairy. I bought a cheese, soy milk, coffeemate with lactose free. I have to drink plenty of water. I took care of my diet until heal it. 3 weeks later, I came in and see GI doctor. I told him I am doing fine and getting better. He asked me the question, If you have any threw up or diarrhea after you out of the hospital? I told him no. I was careful what I eat. He said, you can eat anything you want. If any food is bother you and don't eat it. I will never eat lettuce, romanie salad again. I can't eat it because cause diarrhea easy. It's so strange. I suggest you go to supermarket or health food store to look for lactose-free at dairy. You can eat an "Aged cheese" I hope it will help you get better. Just be careful what you eat. You can't eat any seeds, raw vegetable and fruits. That what I learned it from dietitian. Now, I can eat fruits and vegs. I haven't get throw up since last January at the hospital. I will go see GI doctor next Thursday morning. P.S. Hospital is the worst ever I had. It's not fun! I got many IV moved on my arms, I got many draw the blood in early morning. I hate the needles stuff! I got a blood clot in my hip. I got double IV for my colon and blood clot to rid of it.

Lactose-Free is in everywhere at Supermarket with health aisle at department and Health Food Store. Make sure you go to Lactose-free refrigerator same as Dairy. You will see it. You can check it out at yellow page in your homepage. It will help you to find it easy. I know they're little expensive. I don't really like to drink a real cow's milk. I prefer use Soy Milk. It's good for my digestive. It's good for baby too.

Thank you. I didn't think there were lactose-free in other foods other than milk. We do have some health food stores here. I will have to really look.
Also, I worry that the doctor will just prescribe me IBS pills. I would rather avoid the offending food than take pills. I'd love to see a dietician if my insurance pays for it. |

You can drink Soy Milk because it have a lactose-free. You don't have to drink a real cow milk. I know it's bad for IBS, Crohn's disease and colitis.
You can check it out at Health Food. Good luck! I don't want to take a prescribe for my health. I prefer to eat right health. I used to take a prescribe for my ulcerative colitis on pain less and stop nausea that all. Now I am fine. I don't have to take them at all. I can use them for emergency only. If it's expired and throw it away. Quote:

Go to Naturopath and they might be able to help your body become desensitized to lactose.
My sister and nephews are undergoing this sort of stuff at the Naturopath and they feel so much better. By the way, my uncle diagnosed me with lactose intolerance, but I guess it's mild. Also I don't drink much milk, don't eat cheese unless mixed with food nor do I eat a lot of chocolate. |

go to Joe Trader's or Whole Food. They are healthy grocery stores.
![]() I am aware about lactose because I am lactose user for 17 years and use less dairy needs. Watch what you eat and drink.... like milk in your cereal and eat chesseburger or anything like that. Okay - about my hospitalized last September 2000 (8 years ago) in Dallas, I have no food in my stomach and keep vomited, ofc BM often. My parents took me to ER then put me in bed for two days then go home with doctor's comments about diet food list. Now I can not find that paper anymore after I moved here St Louis. Also, I had surgery on my stomach when I was 11 years old...long time ago, not need another surgery because of that plm. Now, I just had plm with acid inside there so I think it is just GERM from something in food. I found out I had Lactose Intolerance when I was 21 and still am for 17 years now. Watch what you eat and drink.... |

In your case, you should see a doctor. They can probably give you better answers. It could be that you're allergic to something else, a specific ingredient, a specific brand, or a bad mix of 2 things such as your pills and milk. I have a friend who hates Dr. Pepper, but loves Mr. Pibb. They're both the same kind of soda, but made a bit differently by different companies.

I have an appointment with GI doctor on Thursday. I will figure it out what is going on. I will never eat lettuce, cabbage, romanie again. But I can eat spinach only. It's easy to digest. I used to drink a Dr. Pepper. It made me threw up with acid came out from my stomach.

No, insurance in US, I do not think cover alternative therapy. If there are ANY, it's probably rare and slowly coming to acceptance as a way to alternative medicine.
I think that I will ask them again to see if they have another way to bypass this $200, but there's also two other locations that I remembered I can go see. I ate PB Sandwich with water ONLY for lunch and I have symptoms. I read the ingredients for them and the bread contains milk! Aahh! |

Ha, ha. Tell me about it. I've both IBS and lactose intolerance. I find that if I stock up on bean soup and eat it a few times a week, I don't have a problem. I was dx'd with IBS when I was 19... it can be painful.
I notice that if I eat pizza with a lot of cheese or lots of other dairy products, it can cause embrassing problems with gas. If I try to hold it in, I feel like my insides are rotting away and that I'm turning green.

I come from a family with a myriad of digestive issues. My Dad has GERD and is lactose intolerant. My sister has GERD, lactose intolerance, and ulcerated colitis. And, as mentioned, I have IBS.
We're a "fun" family!

Hi. I have GERD and am Lactose intolerant. I post because I don't want anyone reading this thread to think they have to go to a health food store if they are lactose intolerant. Solution is simple, stay away from lactose. Skim milk, cheese made from skim milk (moserrela sp), pasta whole grain. whole grain bread. fruit veggie. Any red meat.
To figure out your dieting needs, do a search internet, you will find something. |

But, still good advice. If the problem is just lactose intolerance, you're right. If the person limits or eliminates foods containing lactose, they're problem free!

I have lactose intolerant since 1997 after major sick from viruses in stomach, after that, lactose intolerant in during my childhood is severe, I can't consume alot of milk, cheese, ice cream or any contain milk with lactose at this time, unless if took Lactaid pills and my stomach got more worse then went visit clinic at hospital then had operate for upper endoscopy in 1998 and prescribed an medicine, it was called Prilosec (not OTC version, there's no OTC at this time) and few others, I started feel alot better and severe of lactose intolerant has been decline, as I just got used with lactose intolerant, after that, I got some heartburn issue.
I still have lactose intolerant but mildly, I only got diarrhea and rarely to get upset or cramp stomach, I can consume of milk, cheese, ice cream or any contain lactose but only cause diarrhea, it's not very big deal since I got used of it. I'm currently have problem with heartburn, I usually take generic version of Protonix, it work so decent, also I want take Nexium, that's more stronger than Protonix but only problem, my medicaid won't cover on Nexium since there's no generic version for Nexium, the pharmacist told me it's cost $150 for 30 pills at Target, I was like rip off and went picked Protonix instead. I stopped Prilosec in last 7 years ago and went switched to Rolaids, just in case for upset/cramp stomach and severe heartburn. I had tried soy milk before and hate it, I rather to drink regular 2% milk or whole milk, there's Lactaid milk that contain cow's milk with lactose free.
