after 2 months of not being in band, i still have elbow problems :/
So, I recently graduated from high school, and I also finished my career as a percussionist in the winter and fall drumline. I have not been playing for a little over a month or two months. We finished drumline at the end of april, near may. And the pain has been off and on in my elbow. I think its the tendinitis. But honestly i don't know. I haven't seen the doctor about it but i might set up an appointment, but my parents might not let me since they think i'm a baby about it.
So today I decided to get a new elbow brace to help my elbow out. The brace i had is about 4 years old. I got my old brace in my sophomore year when i started getting elbow problems from playing on the marimba for the first time. The new elbow brace seems to help. But on my part i need to ice my elbow some more. I've been taking medicine and that helps too but not all the time. But i need to ice my elbow more. I hear that lecture from my dad constantly whenever i complain about my elbow. gah! I might have done some damage to my elbow!

Get a percussion instructor to find out if you're doing anything habit-wise as part of your playing style that you need to change. Sometimes we develop bad habits that hinder our speed and execution in playing, and it helps to identify them and work them out of our system. I've had to go through this many years after I had stopped playing during college.
I was going to hazard a guess that you have either high salt and/or fat levels in your dietary habits, but you're barely out of high school, though... I have to watch salt and oils. I've had similar problems with my elbows in my very early 40s that stopped once I cut back the sale AND the oils (salad dressings, cooking oils, you name it). In fact, the oils were even worse than salt! Good luck, and write up what you find out! |

My pit tech told me countless of times before to use my wrist and use less arm. I have a tendency to not pay attention to what technique i'm using and i would accidentally use more arm than wrist. I've been trying to lay off of the fast-food stuff, in band we were lectured that we need to drink a lot of water, eat healthier foods, etc. Looking back i remember i would eat panera salads (my favorite is their bbq chopped chicken salad), if i don't have time then i would hurry and eat mcdonalds because we would have to load up our band truck which takes about almost an hour or so and i would have maybe 45 minutes to hurry and eat and get ready for a competition or a football game. I've been trying to make myself eat more fruits and veggies, If my mom or my dad makes lunch/dinner and serves it with fruit or veggies i would grab that. right now i'm icing my arm. Whenever i have to lift something heavy like a basket of laundry, or when i'm driving on the highway my elbow can't stand it. I don't have an arm rest for my elbow (it's my left elbow that's been hurting) in my car and i'll rest it on the door if i can, plus i would wear my arm brace sometimes. my fellow percussionist told me that the arm brace doesn't help so much because it weakens the muscle or something like that. The pain is off and on. there are good days and bad days when it comes to my elbow. Today is one of those bad days. |

Honestly i have no clue, I would have had this pain a long time ago, even before i started band. And I started having this pain since my sophomore year when i first started playing hard music in my section of the band which is being a marimba player. I haven't worn my brace very much or icing my elbow so my parents think that i'm just being a baby about it, they honestly don't understand it. and I'm thinking about setting up an doctor appointment but i don't know which doctor to go to that specialize in stuff like this. My peditrictian told me to ice and take medicine, which was when i went to her in my sophomore year. That was the only time i went to see a doctor about my elbow.

Try a physical therapi8st or even a trainer in the gym. Doing exercises to strengthen your whole arm is the best thing to do. I workout regularly and can get elbow problems. You can stretch the arm and use different exercises to keep it moving. Right now I have a twinge in the elbow but just adjust mt movements. The brace is actually bad . You need to work harden your arm
