Obama Scoffs at Sidwell's Snow Closing

Obama Scoffs at Sidwell's Snow Closing | NBC Washington

It's no secret that D.C.-area schools have a history of closing at the drop of a snowflake.

Watch VideoPresident Barack Obama laughs at D.C.-area schools' reaction to a little snow and ice.

Obama Scoffs at Sidwell's Snow Closing

Winter Weather Around D.C.

The weather outside turned frightful overnight, as snow turned to freezing rain.
But the concept seems very foreign to President Barack Obama, who experienced the practice firsthand Wednesday when his daughters' school, Sidwell Friends, closed due to snow and ice.

"My children's school was canceled today, because of what, some ice?" Obama said during a photo opportunity with economic leaders, who began chuckling. "As my children pointed out, in Chicago, school is never canceled. In fact, my 7-year-old pointed out that you go out for recess. You wouldn't even stay indoors."

Obama said he would have to instill "some flinty Chicago toughness" into Washingtonians.

"When it comes to the weather, folks in Washington don't seem to be able to handle things," he said.

We have been mocked at for years and now our president is mocking us!!! Too funny!

Snow I agree is no big deal. But there was solid ice. I had zero traction. And I couldn't even keep track of the sidewalk because it was just solid ice from the sides of the buildings to the curb.

You might be used to it, Obama, but I'm not.

By the way school wasn't canceled for me today.

Must be public schools or something. My university is a private university so it makes its own decisions. Sidwell is a private school so they make their own decision as well. Private schools often close more ready than public schools because there is usually a percentage of the student body that has to commute in from the suburbs, which often get more inches of snow and have colder temperatures than in the city. Public schools' students all live within a certain mile radius of the school so they can assume weather conditions are the same for all students.

My high school closed today.

my state university is very very stubborn. They rarely close for this kind of snow day unless if there's flooding or whatsoever (we did have major flood twice). They usually do the delayed opening.

I'm glad he stayed home and safe. I wish I had too because I almost fell twice and I ended up showing up late for a test, even though I left the house early.

we did have very icy weather and people were slipping left and right. 2 students got injured - broken wrist and other thing. The university was hit with complaints and angry calls. since then.... the university has gotten more forgiving and does issue more closing days or delayed opening.

One of my friends who works in DC said that her job was opened 2 hours late due to the ice. I am VERY surprised that some universities opened on time...very surprised.

I mean it's a given that's why universities and schools close in the first place. They don't want to deal with lawsuits related to people falling on their way to or from class.

My university is very lucky to not be hearing from me because it was ridiculously icy.

I love that Obama and his sense of humor.

You know what? Obama is right!!!

Harsh winter here in Germany every year, we alway prepare when it comes.

I STILL drive to work EVERYDAY and my boys STILL go to school and when there're few inches of snow or ice... We faced tough times in that cold, freeze, snow, ice..

It look like that Washingtonians didn't know how to drive or dress in snow, ice/freezing? How about winter tires ? winter shoes to prevent from slipping? Drive responsibly in bad weather situation?

I cannot understand why some people get offended over Obama because I find Obama's joke is hilarious...

I don't know about America... Just question - does US Government support to hire snowplow and sand spreader drivers in snow and ice condition ?

Obama gives D.C. cold shoulder over 'some ice'
After living in Chicago, he jokes about his girls getting day off from school

WASHINGTON - You call this bad weather? President Barack Obama, steeled by many snowy Chicago winters, expressed disbelief Wednesday when his daughters woke up to find that their classes had been canceled for the day.

Schools in Washington and the surrounding suburbs either opened late or scrapped all their classes because of icy conditions.

"Can I make a comment that is unrelated to the economy very quickly?" the new president told reporters at a gathering with business leaders. "And it has to do with Washington. My children's school was canceled today. Because of, what? Some ice?"

The president said he wasn't the only one who was incredulous. "As my children pointed out, in Chicago, school is never canceled," Obama said to laughter. "In fact, my 7-year-old pointed out that you'd go outside for recess. You wouldn't even stay indoors. So, I don't know. We're going to have to try to apply some flinty Chicago toughness."

Asked if he meant the people of the national's capital are wimps, Obama said: "I'm saying, when it comes to the weather, folks in Washington don't seem to be able to handle things."

Obama's daughters attend the private Sidwell Friends School.

Malia, 10, is a fifth-grader at the middle school campus in the District of Columbia, while younger sister Sasha is in second grade at the elementary school in Bethesda, Md., just outside Washington.

Actually--no.

The falls under the responsibility of the local governments.

You also have to remember that some areas of the country don't normally get snow and when they do--everyone goes into a panic mode.

A month ago--I got 1 1/2 inch of snow on the coast. The schools were closed for one day due to the county government not plowing the snow on the roads.

And where I live--it's flat--go figure.

i call it salt mountain. NYC has this facility as big as half of airplane hangar next to Hudson River. It's where they store the salt in preparation for winter. But you can imagine why i call it "mountain". It's really really that high.

2 Mondays ago, Hampton Roads schools closed due to "possible" snow/ice storm, but we never got a drop of snow.. Now Virginia Beach schools will have to use "makeup" snowless snow day on George Washington day next month.
