Time to Introduce Myself
Hi all. I have been watching forum for awhile but have just started posting and asking questions since the time is getting near. I have Neurofibromatosis 2. I have many many tumors all over body. I have had many surgeries over years for tumor removals around spinal cord, but luckily my vestibular schwanomas were not growing. Then in 2004 I had to have one taken out. I am currently deaf on right side and have a PABI installed. That happened in January 2004. Now the one on the left side is too big so it has to come out. That is planned to take place on November 1, 2007. Since I will then be completely deaf I have been trying to prepare to ease the transition. Yes I will have the PABI to help, but it currently performs about like an ABI. You basically hear beeps and tones. Nothing easily understandable. I am ordering an HTC Mogul from my sprint relay store so that way I can communicate with friends and family since I won't be using a standard cell phone. I haven't taken any lip reading or asl classes, but I am looking into it. I am definitely going to study lip reading because in conjunction with the PABI, some communication is possible. Everybody on the forum has been great and I am learning lots.
I am a 24 year old geek. Computers are my life. I have an Associates in Networking Engineering and a Bachelors in Information Security Systems. I enjoy gaming - xbox (Gamertag: KrzCooter), computer, ds, wii, and gptx, boating, flying, and all radio control sports. I fly R/C Helicopters, airplanes, and cars. I race in the pro series in 1/8 scale buggy class. I am based out of St. Charles, MO. I am also looking for deaf assistance or classes in the St. Louis area. I checked out Missouri Institute for the Deaf's website and they seem to be focused on preparing children to go to a standard nondeaf school. Any suggestions for places to go to in the St. Louis area would be greatly appreciated. Also and hints or tips that you can think of that I should do. Based on the friendly community I have experienced on this site I am sure I will be spending a lot of time here in the future.

Hi! Interesting introduction. What gaming do you do? I play Unreal Tournament with friends on two networked computers. During the summer we spent too much time with the sniper rifle and the short yellow gun (I can't remember what it is called)
![]() . We thought we would have to drop out of college when classes started, but we stopped finally. I tried WoW, but it was boring and required too much time. Good luck with ASL and lip reading. Lip reading is not the magic that many think it is. I tell people that everything has to be perfect...and then I will still just guess. (I am HoH/deaf with two HAs and have always attended hearing schools). But ASL is wonderful, and I hope you feel the same when you learn it.
