Hi. I'm Amy from North Eastern Ohio.
Hello all. I'm very excited to have found this forum. It looks like it is fairly active and that is a big plus!
So, a little about why I'm here: As you can see from the title of this thread, my name is Amy. I am currently taking my first year of ASL classes at Kent State. ASL is something that I have always wanted to learn since I was a little girl and just now have been afforded the opportunity to do so. I also want to learn ASL because my husband is hard of hearing (wears an in-the-ear hearing aid). While he can still hear it is hard to communicate in some public places and other times when he has not put his hearing aid in. I am slowly teaching him what I learn in class and on my own so we can learn together and use ASL when we need to - to communicate with each other. Since I am an eager learner I am REALLY enjoying my ASL class and I am trying to soak up everything I can. I'm hoping to be able to learn even more from this forum. I am very curious about deaf culture and will probably have a lot of questions. I hope to one day be an interpreter in some capacity. And now a little about me personally: I'm 25 years old and have been married for 3 and a half years now. I love animals and my husband and I volunteer for a local rescue (one of our volunteers is deaf and I look forward to using ASL with her when I feel more comfortable!). We have a lot of animals at our house 4 dogs, 2 cats, and 3 parrots. All of our pets are at least second hand pets who were unwanted. I enjoy traveling, hiking/camping and reading (mostly non-fiction). I'm also a vegan and I love to cook and try new things. I think that is about all for now. If you have made it through my long introduction, congratulations! |

Hi, Amy!
Wow, lot of animals! I love animals too and have 2 dogs at my parents house. I also volunteer at the Humane Society and am a vegetarian. I would be vegan, but I like ice cream in summers! Does your husband know ASL? If not, does he know other SL? It is great you are learning ASL.

My husband only knows what I have taught him in ASL. He knows the alphabet really well now and could fingerspell his way around if he had too. He is also learning new signs and I try to use ASL in the house a lot and when we're out too and he can't hear me very well at all (which happened a lot this weekend!!). I'm also really enjoying the aslpro.com site and my husband has been using it too. It is really helpful and I didn't know about it before I joined AD. I'm going to show it to my friends in my ASL class tomorrow too. It is handy to look up something quickly. My handshape dictionary has also become my best friend as well! |
