Smile Hi All, Looking for people in East TN

Hi All,

I'm new to this forum. I am taking an ASL course and want to continue to take all the courses available. I would love to meet someone who knows ASL or uses ASL all the time, who is deaf, and be able to practice and make new friends. I've gone back to school after doing accounting for over 33 years and have changed my profession to child counselor in psychology but for ever that I can remember always wanted to learn ASL. Now is the greatest opportunity because I'll be able to help children who are under going child abuse or school problems with me being able to communicate with them. I'm definitely new, so I know little but am surprised that in the 2 weeks of school just how much I HAVE learnt. I have a very good teacher. We DO NOT talk at all in class so we can learn quickly and quickly.

If anyone is from East Tennesse, near Knoxville, Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, and would love to help me, please feel free to let me know. It would be an honor to have such wonderful help.

Again, I'm also glad to be able to come here and meet new people.

Hugs to all

Altotwo

Sunshine Lady & Blue eyes, Thank you for the welcome. I've contacted the Knoxville Community for the Deaf and they are having a group of people next week on Tuesday that are beginners of ASL, so I'm going to go and see if I can get a chance to meet others. I am so blessed that I can take this class. But next semester, (Jan-May) I'll look into the Tennessee School for the Deaf. I heard they offer classes much, much, MUCH cheaper. To pay just over $1300.00 per course is a little steep. I am definitely going to find classes and complete my education in ASL. I think it is honestly a beautiful language and can kick myself that I never did anything about it years ago when I first wanted to learn it. Well, no further excuses, I'm going to learn it, use it and enjoy making new friends.

Sunshine lady, I am assuming your welcome is in German. I will reply with a "de rien," in French saying "it's nothing." So nice to meet such wonderful people.

Have a great weekend all!

Thanks Moonmoon. I've been learning soooo much these past couple of weeks. I was actually able to ask classmates, their name, their major, where they went to high school, their age and even their favorite colour. What will be nice is next week, there is a silent lunch with some students from the TSD (Tennessee Students for the Deaf) and I'm going to try to take advantage of all the get togethers that were put together for us during the semester. I'm sooooo excited. I'm so glad to be making new friends and hope to find a lasting friendship with someone who is deaf so I can continue to practice my newfound language.

Thank you for the welcome! Appreciate it very much so!

Hugs to all!!!

to Alldeaf forum!

WOW!! You are formerly from Montreal, Quebec in Canada now living in Tennessee. Whoa, that is great. Don't worry about finding some of the deaf people in your area. I just hope Tennessee have a deaf club there. Also most deaf people like to go bowling especially tournament. Look up for organizations and Tennessee Hearing Society. Welcome aboard and have fun with us.

Hi there,
Crystal here and moving to Knoxville next summer, God willing. I am taking up ASL III right now.. in community college. It's very different here in California;apparently, it does not cost nearly as much as you are paying. I have also been checking out Tenn School for the Deaf... I am going to be seeking out employment there when I arrive. Tell me what you find there!! How about Spec Ed/Deaf/Hoh education program there?

A little about me.. Hoh..progressive throughout life... taking up ASL and changed sociology major to Deaf Education after finding out about major lack of educators for Deaf.. also want to be able to apply skills to mission trips to Africa or wherever God would allow me to go and love the Deaf..

anyway nice to meet you and how's TN?

Hi Bebonang, Roadrunner, Crystal71 & sequoias.

Yes, I love it here in TN. Weather has been hot for this year, but love it here. There is the TN school for the Deaf but it's quite a distance from me. I did contact the Knoxville Center for the Deaf and they do teach classes so I will be able to take my classes from them come this winter. I'm glad, because once I graduate, I do not want to loose what I learnt. We are having a deaf lunch Thursday and I'm going to enjoy that.
Crystal, you'll love it here. You may not want to leave after you get here. LOL, LOL. I've lived here now since 2000 and it's one state that is very forgiving in weather (usually). LOL, LOL. When do you graduate? I have a lot of young people in my class that are going into speech pathology. I guess there's a real need for that, but for me, I'm headed into helping young people and abuse and abuse is not only limited to the hearing, so the more education in that I have, the better my qualifications ot help others.

Thank you all for the welcome. I am enjoying my visits here!

May you all have a wonderful, wonderful week!

Hi GHSH & Cheleler,

Thank you for the welcome. Yes, I will be good at it because I am determined to be good at it. I went to my first ASL "Silent Lunch" meet. It was soooooo much fun. I actually understood some of the signs. We were 6 in all that gathered. Next week we are having a bowling tournament with the TSD (Tennessee School for the Deaf) at UT (University of Tennessee). So I'm really looking forward to that and am excited. I know the more I interact with those who sign and are deaf, the quicker I'll learn it. That's is my ultimate goal. Thanks all, you are all so sweet here! :-)

Really, who is that? I would love to get together for coffee sometime with that person. Looks like a perfect opportunity for me to let my new language grow. Nice to meet you!

Hey SunshineLady, what is SFO? I'm sure it is very different living in Germany. My best friend comes from Wales. But that is closer to Canadian English than the US. We both get to laugh at how the english here in the US is sooooooo different. They say "restroom" instead of "bathroom" for an example. Oh, also thanks to Liebling for the welcome.
I'm going to post something on the general board. It's very exciting to me.

Thanks all!

Wekcome to AllDeaf, Altotwo!

Yes, there are at least five members here from the Knoxville area. Only two I know are deaf. At least three other members reside in Tennessee outside Knoxville/eastern Tennessee. I wouldn't feel right to identify them here without asking them first (I am not in touch with any of them).

Have you heard of a deaf gathering held in the "Old City" section of downtown Knoxville? Their website address is: Knoxville Deaf Network.org - for some reason the website is partly censored here.

I grew up in the Knoxville area (Loudon County, where most of my family still live). I attended TSD as a day student though I haven't been back to TSD the time I graduated from there (in the 1990s).

My mother and her husband (my step-father) recently went to Sevier County (S'ville/GB/PF) last Friday with their friends and stayed there for the week-end. They really enjoyed it very much away.

Thanks Brian, I understand about not giving out their info without asking them. I truly do. I am really hoping to make some friends this way and be able to pick up quicker on my ASL. I can remember since I was an early teen how much I wanted to learn it, but at the time, didn't have the capacity to, do to a long story. Anyway, now that I can learn it, I am and hopefully I will be of great use to the community and make new friends along the way. Yes, I know where Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, & Gatlinburg are. I'm in that very area. LOL, LOL.

Glad to have met you. I really enjoy visiting here!

Best to you!

Warm hugs!
