Unhappy KidzKorner

Hi. I'm new to this site. I'm learning sign language (PSE) but am frustrated at how hard it is for me to read someone else signing. I've got 90 hours of study and have not too many problems signing. Does anyone have any suggestions for me on learning to read sign?

Welcome to AD!

And yes, I am learning ASL and I've learned more in two hours drinking coffee with other deaf people than I can in two hours studying a book.

Thanks for the info. Sadly, not much deaf culture here. I learn sign to teach my daycare kids. I love the language, it is so beautiful. I've decided to just sign everything I say all day and watch as many videos of signing that I can.My sign class has silent dinners fairly often. It's fun and interesting to see peoples reactions to us. smile back.

ASL is a little different for me. But yes, signing to each other is the better way to learn. My daycare little kids pick it up quickly. We have silent dinners and that is fun.

Welcome to AD! Do you have a Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing in your area? If so, that would be another place to socialize with Deaf people in your community.

KidzKorner, many churches have deaf congregants and interpreters for their services. I would recommend finding a church to attend which has this option available.
The more you are exposed to sign, the easier it will be for you to pick it up.

'Reading' another person can be hard especially when learning how to sign...sometimes it can help to sign in front of a mirror while you practice signing the words as well as using some of the suggestions already given here. Interacting with others who sign does help tremendously. Of course, it can at times get frustrating indeed...the 'key' is....patience, patience and more patience.

Wishes you much success while you learn and hopefully you'll be able to find a person or group to lessen those frustrations.

Welcome to Alldeaf and hope you'll enjoy your stay here as well.

Have a great day!
