Hello From Scotland
Hi there,
I'm 27 yrs old and I'm from Edinburgh, Scotland was born deaf and I wear hearing aids in boths ears. I communicate orally and have no knowledge of any form of sign language since my parents made the choice to have me educated in mainstream schools. I'm tremendously excited to meet you guys as I don't really have that much contact with other deaf people at all. There are reasons why I don't have much contact with other deaf people and it would take way too long to get them all up here. My goal in life is to be a writer of some sort, whether it be by writing novels, short stories, movie & tv scripts. I'm a member of a writers web community called Writersdock, so you'll find me there if I'm not here. I look forward to chatting to you guys and having few laughs! ![]() |

Hey, I've never studied writing at uni either, just an unpublished amateur at the moment. Most of my stuff is rubbish anyway but with help from the guys on the other website I'm slowly starting to improve.
The closest I've been to Uni is to an HNC in Structural & Civil Engineering, yep it is as boring as it sounds! You've got the right website site there, was just a little unsure if it would be allowed to post a link to it, seeing as i've only just joined here. They know I'm deaf and I've had no trouble at all from anyone on that site. It's one of the friendliest and most open minded sites I've been on. |

Welcome to AD!
What kind of writing do you enjoy? I also love to write. Short stories, nonfiction, poetry -- you name it. Right now I'm in the process of writing my autobiography (which describes my experiences with deafblindness) for future publication. Several people have encouraged me to do this, so I thought, "Why not?" It has been very therapeutic for me in alot of ways. In regards to writing, I was fortunate enough to have 3 wonderful English teachers (one of them a published writer) who nutured my love for writing. Can you tell me a little more about Writersdock? I'd like to check it out sometime! ![]()

In short, if you are interested in writing and want an impartial view on your work, this website is for you. And now i must stop because i sound like one of bad commercials you see for fitness equipment! Writing is good for the soul, my brothers! I love it and i can't stop, I always have a project bubbling away. Right now I'm working on a collaborative fantasy project with a few other writers, we may self publish an anthology of our stories when we finish. How far are you with your autobiography? Have you hit the stage in your writing where you just don't care what you're writing even if its total crap? |

I might post something here, when I've written something decent, which could be a long long time. How long does an ice age last? Because it'll be as long as that! hehe
I talk a good game, but when it comes right down to it, my writing dosn't really compare with anything out there already, so i only write for myself. you never know right? Gotta keep that hope alive! |

I was the same, in high school I used to love writing stories as it was pretty much my only escape from the bullying. It wasn't until about two years ago I was dreaming of being a writer and i spoke to my brother about it and you know what he said "What are you waiting for? Get Writing!" If you follow a dream it doesn't matter if you don't get it, at least you'll have the satisfaction that you tried your best to achieve it.
The secret to it is very simple, read all you can and write all you can. It doesn't matter if its good or not, if you're happy with it, who cares what anyone else thinks. You want to write? What are you waiting for? Get writing! PS I have to go now as its 1.25am and I can't keep my eyes open any longer. Goodnight folks, will speak to you guys tomorrow. |

Oh yes, I like wearing my kilt and sporran, so much more comfortable than trousers, plus it's a great ice breaker at parties too. Guys, get yourself a kilt, it'll do wonders for your love life. I garantee that no matter how ugly or overweight you think you are, a smart shirt and kilt will make sure the ladeezs pay attention to you all night long!!! If you're like me and turn into a babbling idiot when chatting to a beautiful woman (as they're all beautiful), the kilt can be a great excuse to flirt. |

You have to be wary of movies like those ones, as some of the scenes were actually shot in Ireland, apparently Ireland looks more scottish, go figure!
"FREEDOM!!!!" Scotland is a beautiful place, but part of that reason is to do with what the english did to scotland 200 yrs ago. Scotland is the most sparsley populated country in europe because of the highland clearances. If that hadn't happened, you would see a very different scotland today. Funnily enough the highland clearances did do a lot for america as many people over the pond can trace their history back to scotland. We do have own devolved parliament, but still have to take our orders from westminister in london. Did you know that the american declaration of independence is actually based on a letter written by scottish nobles to the pope in rome 1320, ours is called the Declaration of Arbroath "It is not for honour nor riches, nor glory that we fight but for liberty alone, which no true man lays down except with his life." |

Speaking of Trek, do you like the character Scotty? Jimmy Doohan was one of the fan favorites on the convention circuit until he died last year. |

I'm ST fan too! I have about 900 ST books on ebook format, dunno how I'm gonna read them all though! hehe I also own all the TV series and movies on DVD including the animated ST series as well.
It was a real shame enterprise got cancelled, it was starting to get really good, though i wasn't too hot on the Peter "Robocop" Weller episodes. My favourite series of them all is DS9. Scotty was cool! Ye cannae huv an enterprise wi' oot a scotsman in yon engin' room. Don't know if you heard over there but in scotland here was a bit of an argy bargy going on about where in scotland scotty actually came from. Some say aberdeen, glasgow, or even edinburgh too. It all came about because of the various local councils wanting to commemorate Doohan's life and contributions. I'm looking forward to next ST movie, should be good as JJ Abrahms, the guy behind LOST and ALIAS, is writing and directing it. |
