Smile Hi! New to List

Hi, I just joined! I found out about this site after someone on another message board suggested I look up this one.

I'm Maggie. I'm 24, and hard of hearing. Over the past two years I've experienced gradual changes in my hearing (probably) from Meniere's Disease (bilateral and progressive). One ear is moderate loss, other is mild at best (the loss fluctuates from moderate/mild to severe). But I also have always had an auditory processing condition making it hard for me to follow speech. I don't wear a hearing aid because (1) sounds are also amplified to the point where it hurts; (2) with the processing problems, it doesn't make much of a difference.

In elementary school they taught us ASL fingerspelling and I thought I was in heaven LOL I tried to get my friends to spell things out back and forth with me because there for the first time I was able to communicate and be understood, and was able to understand what people were telling me! I've never had anyone around me who uses ASL, though, so that was the only exposure I've ever had to it.

So recently a friend taught me a little of the ASL she knows and it strongly reminded me how I used to feel when using fingerspelling. I want to know and use ASL. With my recent hearing loss combined with the processing condition, using ASL makes me feel like I can express myself fully for the first time in my entire life. I'm learning it on my own as quickly as I can until I can find someone in my area who teaches it because I know I can only learn so much on my own.

That was kind of long, <grin>, but I just wanted to introduce myself!

Smile Welcome aboard

Welcome to AD. Most of the folks here are friendly and willing to answer questions.

I'm suprised that you're learning ASL just on your own. Many community colleges have classes now and there's plenty of CDs, DVDs, and video tapes with ASL on them. Let me know if you want a couple of links and I'll set you up. You may also want to check with your local rehab commission office. Good Luck.

I would love some links! Actually I bought a set of DVDs for ASL off of eBay, and when I finally received them they turned out to be broken (it was a set of three, and the only one that worked was the fingerspelling one LOL). I tried my local library without success; they only had a dictionary which is similar to something I already have. Right now I'm trying to learn from a couple of books, but it would be so much easier to have a visual model to work with. I'd like to buy a good tape or DVD, and I'd love recommendations.

Thanks very much!
Also, thanks to you and everyone for the welcome!

I've been on this board since January and we get something like this once a month. Here's an old thread with some of the info. I agree with the part about books - only so much info, but still need more.

http://alldeaf.com/showthread.php?t=18119

I was able to pick up a 2 CD Instant Immersion package at Wally World for $10-15 and liked it. Will buy the bigger set once things settle down.

I'm not familiar with Ebay policies. If you receive something damaged, you should be able to send it back for refund or new product. Good Luck.

Hi! Thank you (& everyone!) for the welcome!!

I'm from Columbus, OH (well, about 1 hour away, really).

I'm typing this while lying down cause I'm in the middle of having a Meniere"s "attack" which is always fun. I get them more when weather fronts come thru, and I think the hurricane front is affecting us already (if anyone on here is from there, I hope you're all ok!).

I'd write more but I think I need to go take some dramamine.... <grin>
