May your birthday involve ample amounts of chocolate cake, ice cream, candles, balloons, and whatever else makes you happy!

I also have a progressive loss, started at about age 32 or so. I have worn hearing aids for almost 3 decades now. Despite all that, life is basically good. I have a wonderful husband, two adorable dogs, had a good career (now retired), etc., etc.

My point is, of course it's normal to be worried. However, look at all technology can do. It is AMAZING what progress has been made over the past two or three decades. I am sure that progress will continue.

You might ask your audiologist if she could recommend any therapists who work with late-deafened people; it might do you good to talk with someone about your fears and concerns.

And do take charge of your own life. Stay active; let your friends know when you need help with understanding something, but don't let your hearing loss take over your life. If you are working, ask for appropriate accommodation if that's possible, and try to keep yourself as up to date as possible both on what's available to help, and even more important, keep yourself up to date professionally in your field of interest.

There is a thread on here about adjusting to being late-deafened; you might find some useful insights posted there from people who have been through the same thing.

I will be 39 this week and my audiogram is much much worse than yours.

Good luck.

My audiogram has been worse by far since I first could read one at age nine. Life is good, and usually what you choose to make of it.

Except for discrimination of course. But at 38 you must have some direction in life, true?

How do you know it is worst than mine? My dB loss is at the 110 to 120 range.

But you have HA and they do help you. I would assume you have some working nerves in the cochlear
When I tried hearing aids, nothing.

Oh because your nerves were cut during your CI surgery, correct?

As far as I know, I was born profoundly, was forced to try hearing aids and test showed that they never worked for me. So my parents had to wait til i was 2 to do the implant surgery. But if i had any nerves working before all of my surgeries, then yes surgery basically killed them all.

I would go with HA's. Why risk something going wrong and lose what hearing you have?(which is quite a bit)

Do you have otosclerosis? Sometimes I understand that can be a very effective treatment.

Hair cells can be damaged during some surgery as the electrode array is being positioned, and often were in the earlier surgeries or in repeated surgeries. It's normally not detectible bc most CI recipients are already operating in the large profound range prior to surgery. If some hack decided to reach out -- pretty far from the cochlea, in surgical distance -- and cut your cochlear nerve, which is also known as the auditory or acoustic nerve, you would not be able to hear using your CI. This would be significant medical mistake.

surgical replacement of the bone is more effective.
