Well, Miss Kat was activated today....it went terribly.

She hates it with a firery passion. She says that she can't understand anything and that it all sounds like beeps. I feel awful for her! She says she doesn't want to wear it, but the only way for it to get better is wearing it!! She is so frustrated that she can't understand speech...poor baby :( I think she thought it would sound like her old ear, and it doesn't.

So, for CI users...how long did it take for things to start sounding better?

She just loved the other one, right from the start (even though I am SURE it sounded exactly like this one, but back then, that was better than hearing aids!) so we weren't prepared for this!

sorry to hear, FJ. this reminds me of news about court ordering a little girl to wear CI all the time.

:(

Not having bilateral Implants-I would guess one can easily remember the first one when activated-if not that far back in the past. Would the second one- be a problem in "mapping"?

Nah, it's just that it is new. You know how all newly implanted adults say that everything sounds weird? That's all it is, she just wasn't prepared for it.

aww sorry! I'm sure it will get better..maybe keep it on the p1 volume and don't move up to a higher volume for a few days? hopefully it will sound a bit better in a few days

Maybe she will feel better if you set a time that is reasonable, like two weeks, and say it will be lots better by then. And count off on a calendar with stickers or something?

We made a chart and said that if she wears it everyday for two weeks she can go to the "big movies". She seems to think that is a fair deal :giggle:

What is so crazy is that the first one HAD to have sounded exactly like this, but her reaction was SOOOOO different! She thought the first one was amazing! She was so interested in all the new sounds, she thought it was so cool! This one she wants to be able to understand speech...that could take awhile!

Poor Miss Kat! When does she go back for more mapping? I hope tomorrow will be better.

Her optimum MAP is in P3. Right now she is at P1 with the volume set at 50%. We hope she'll work her way up over the next couple days.

Her next MAPing is in a month.

Poor kate. Kate would thought the first one would be exaclt with the second one but it wasnt. SHe must forget how she first time got it like over year ago. hope things get better for her soon.

To answer your question, it was around the 2 weeks or so when I noticed a difference. It is different, from the point when its switched on over time. If i can explain this right, when its first activated all the background noise is there and theres alot of it. So just after its activated when its turned on theres ALOT of annoying noise there. BUT after 2 to 3 weeks or so I noticed when I woke up and turned it on that background noise was ALOT LESS. Guess what im trying to say is you cant actually tell while wearing it when it declines but turning it on after not wearing it awhile you can tell. Kinda like when the sun goes down, it goes down a little at a time and you dont really notice it. But if you go in while its light and then back out after the sun is down completly its a huge difference. That make sense?

Me, too. We went with just the "new ear" for 2 weeks, I think. When Li' s tired, even now, she says "just one ear, no thank you" and alternates.

I'm sorry to hear that Ms. Kat had a bad day
you know what they say.... the better you get, the more you'll gain!

Today was better. She wore it all day without a fuss and let us turn it up. It is still a huge shock when she first put it on, but after 30 seconds or so she is ok.

FJ ive been using mine since march 2009 and the overload thing still bothers me when i first turn it on sometimes. so maybe its normal.

Everything is so much better now. She still doesn't like to put it on right away, but even that is soooo much better. she is now turned up to the optimum MAP and will even watch TV with just the new one on. She says it sounds better, and she is starting to be able to hear a little speech with it (but not close to the other side!) She has her first speech session with it, and the therapist (who has known Miss Kat since she was 2) was amazed at how well she was doing with both CI's. We hadn't seen her for almost a year, and she was AMAZED at how chatty Miss Kat was and how well she could both understand others spoken language and how clear hers was.
