Recruitment from Hearing Loss Explained

Recruitment from Hearing Loss

Interesting article. It explains that recruitment also causes fuzzy hearing.

Does everybody with sensioneural hearing loss suffer from recruitment or do only some people suffer from it?

recruitment is very common and tends to increase with more hearing loss but there are just a few that are recruitment tolerant to a degree.

I didn't start having problems with recruitment till I was 19 and it got so severe that I didn't wear my HA for two years. This was before I got my CI.

It was interesting to read about recruitment since I didn't really know what it was.

I have this and I've never even heard of it. It explains a lot.

That's a very good description of what causes recruitment. I get recruitment and can tolerate it up to a point, but when I'm tired it seems to get much worse, and sounds I can normally tolerate are almost unbearable. Does anyone else experience worse recruitment when they are tired?

Probably a sizable minority get it but I don't think it is the majority. I never heard of it before until after I got my CI and I'm very knowledgeable on all kinds of stuff. I myself can't say I experienced it with my HA. I may have as I have had times were I heard very well (more than usual but nothing like with my CI). Interestingly enough, I have experienced it slightly with my CI now and then (not often and not bothersome just noticeable). It is the oddest feeling where I sense my hearing just is ON like all the sudden I can hear like nothing else. The reason I know I'm having it is when I quickly remove my coil transmitter and I hear a high pitch noise. The other thing is my head feels different...hard to explain but almost like light-headedness. That is the other tip off that I'm having such a "spell".

Interestingly, for me there was a threshold. I had severe problems with recruitment until my hearing loss exceeded a PTA of 90-100. Now I have so little hearing, nothing ever seems very loud. Just noise.
