I'll give you that. I happen to like snark but I have a sarcastic sense humor. Glad to see that I've lured you away from FB games.

Possibly Traumatized 4 Year Old Won't Wear Implants

This is a good read and explains why CI doesn't work for everyone. Read the 41 comments and come to your own conclusions.

edit: comment 39 by Dana is very informative and explains some of the reasons. Her own CI gives lesser quality sound than her HAs

sarcasm.... probably the most complicated aspect for others to grasp. I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure I have read an article a while back that a person who can recognize/make sarcasm indicates a higher level of cognitive function (in other word - a higher level of intelligence). the statistic showed a surprising result that a relatively small percentage of population can do sarcasm

FJ has a right to ask you to state the basis upon which you make such a statement given the low device failure rate to begin with. Additionally, in the past you have stated that although you teach kids who no longer wear their implants, you did not think it was part of your job to inquire as to why they were no longer wearing their implants. Thus, how would you know whether the device even failed to begin with or they just chose not to wear their implant.

You should also be upfront and state that you work in a non-oral educational setting and that many of your students come to the program because, for whatever reason, they were not successful either in the mainstream or in an oral deaf education program. Much like a teacher at an oral school saying the opposite that she knows of no student who was not reimplanted after a device failure, your experiences are to a certain extent skewed by the environment in which you teach.

The number of device failures is indeed rare and while there does not appear to be any figures on the percentage of reimplantion after device failure, it is fair to say that the reimplant decision is probably directly related to the success, however defined, the individual was experiencing with their implant prior to its failure.

Ok, then I dont have a right to share my experiences? However, this title is about a CI not working for a certain person. Hello??

See my post #3 copied and pasted here...

Nothing new..I see numerous of children whose CIs do not work year after year. However, I do see some children with working CIs too.

I make ONE comment and I get barreled with questions by a certain posted which I have answered but yet still get asked the same questions again despite answering so I told this person it is fine if she doesnt believe me.

U seem so intent on attacking me whenever you can. Geez..

Ok fine..

There are 3 different types of CI companies. How can you be sure how many people it DOES work for? You cant.

It doesnt work for a lot of people and it does work for a lot of people. It depends on the person and the CI.

Good point. You are the one with a CI so your points have more valid.

Mainstream schools sure like to paint it that you need a CI... and if the CI doesn't work, then you're "functionally mentally slow."

*smacks head into desk*

I swear people who only have training in "special needs" should not partake in Deaf Education.

Mainstreams schools are seriously stupid if they think THAT. Just because you cannot hear doesnt mean you are SLOW. It's not even related!

I agree..Special Ed and Deaf Ed are two completely different fields. I should know since my BA degree is in Special Ed and my MA is in Deaf Ed. I made the mistake of majoring in Special Ed thinking it would enable me to teach deaf children. I am so grateful for my MA because I gained a better understanding of deaf children and how to educate them.

U seem to have a well balanced view despite having a CI. It seems like many parents who have children with CIs wont accept any cons about CIs. None at all.

If the parents give their children CI's without even accepting any cons are setting their expectations too high and letting them and the child down if they find it not to be what they want. You have to have the correct knowledge and be prepared for anything.

This was because the child was HELD DOWN. They did not give the child the time and space to explore his implant. That was it, he had no choice but to be held down and have it forced on his head. A major no-no. Let the child deal with it and come to terms with it in his own time.
So it DID work but the child did not want to wear it. I would not if i was in the child's position

Yeah... they need sensitivity training. I means, I am sure they know that CI doesn't work for everyone, but man, the way they word things to students is brutal. Okay, I can see how that method would work for someone who is low-functioning, but for someone with high intellect, it's destructive to their self-esteem.

Oh please, give us a break. You made a statement and you were asked to provide the factual basis for it. No one "attacked" you or "barreled" you with questions. Rather than answer the legitimate questions posed to you, you try to turn it into some non-existent attack on you.

BTW you never answered FJ's question.

See post #33

I lost track. I dont keep a journal. Been in the teaching field for over 10 years.

Should I keep a journal of how many children with failed implants? I never thought much of it and just see it the same way as I do with children whose HAs do not work for them. Just like I have seen children with implants that work.

I answered a question and it didnt seem enough so what should I do? Lie to make her feel better?

BTW..I never said FJ attacked me..just barreled me with questions.

U are the one who attacked my post.
