Lightbulb Gradual Hearing Loss

I think gradual hearing loss is the worst kind, because you start out hearing(better to be Hearing or Deaf , not have to go from on to the other and spend any period of time suspended in between).

I have progressive hearing loss and it's a challenge. I'm suspended between HOH and Deaf. I have no idea how long the progression will take. It's like traveling without a road map or even traffic lights. A good sense of humor is definitely required. I use dark humor a lot anyway.

I don't mind mine. It's part of me, I was born that way. It can be defeatist to let dwell negatively on it.

My mother was always negative about her hearing loss and she allowed this negativity to get in the way of making the most of what she does have and using it to better her skills and her abilities.

The biggest problem I have with my mother has been her denial on all things. I finally got her to buy the best hearing aids she could buy and to invest in the latest technogoly for phones and loop system for her television. Everyone has commented since on how much better she is doing with everything since she did this. Her own self-esteem and confidence is much higher.

I think the worst thing is that we rely on our hearing as one of our senses and when one starts to go you become abit panicky about how to cope. My mother has had the local police and fire service in her bedroom after breaking in when she inadvertantly set off her security alarm. That really made her feel foolish and inadequate and it took away more of her confidence. Building this up with the new technology has helped alot.

She is 0 decibel hearing without aids and 30 decibel with. Amazing really!
