Rollercoasters

My best friend and I are going to florida with my mom on sunday. we're going to be riding rollercoasters, at least we plan to. I have a cochlear implant on my left side... is there any real risk?

I'm not an audiologist or CI specialist but from what I understand, there is a risk of you generating static electricity, which can shock you and do some damage to your CI. Also, there's a risk you might lose it during the ride. Personally, I would take it off during the ride if I had one. I don't wear my hearing aid when riding rides because I don't want to lose my aid plus don't want to hear myself scream "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!" .
(Have a great time!)

If it were me, I'd take it off during the ride as well (as I would my glasses) so that I wouldn't lose it, and enjoy the ride!!!

I have actually lost my hearing aid on a ride before at Busch Gardens... The ride attendant was kind enough to let me look around for it afterwards. Thank God I found it laying on the grass below. Undamaged. So my advice, take it off before you ride.

Just remove the processor from your head, that's what I do. With the ones that have bars that come over the head, the more padding the better, don't want to crack your head to bad.

It depends on the ride... If it's a "tame but wild" one like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disney parks, then I'll keep it on. Space Mountain, I tend to take it off cuz I can't see the dangers in the dark... but I did kept it on for Rock n Roller coaster (the Aerosmith one at MGM Studios, Fla) becuz i awnted to hear the music with it. But as a precaution, i put up my hood (wore a hooded sweatshirt) and pulled on the strings... Of course I look hideous with my hood framing my head with the strings pulled taut, but then, that ride is DARK and no one but your conscience will see yourself. (it worked, but HURT when i banged heads with the head protective rest thingy that keeps u from getting whiplash. If i had done it again, I would have taken it off - the pain and constant worrying about it was no competion to the actual hearing of music (was so loud that it sounded like static). So take it off for the wilder ones, but the baby coasters, its okay. It depends on which type - BTE are best taken off, but if its a bodyworn one like a SPrint, then I leave it on (the cord acts like a tether cord). Just my two cents.

Like others said before, the biggest risk is losing it. It just depends on the ride.

Of course, if the ride deals with water splashing everywhere, then bring along a ziplock bag to store it.

My fear was trauma from hitting the part inside your head... like banging your head against the side headrests. For the record, I went on the Hulk and it was amazing! BTE and HA were both off...
