I am extremely angry with pediatrics, audiologist, otolaryngology's, etc. They are hearing professionalism doctors. They are very oppressive to the deaf community due to smallest number of group. They voted with FDA and Consensus Development Conferences in June 1995 without consult or invite the Deaf people in that conference. They do not realize how dangerous are the Deaf children with cochlear implants when they become older. itself cochlear implants destroy their identities and very ambivalence in two cultures!!

We need to do something with FDA and they need to think more careful for the Deaf babies, they do not deserve to have their implants on their tiny heads. They did not ask for change their true identities. Their languages become more confuse into two worlds with hearing and Deaf people. :(

The medical society have been persuade to the parents. They have not search into two side of world in Deaf Community for who we are. We are ability to do anything expect hear and speak.

It is cuz the medical society sees deafness from a medical viewpoint. They dont care about cultural values or the Deaf community. There is a demand from the parents to make us as "normal" as possible and the medical community will do whatever it takes to meet that demand. It is unfortunate.

If there was no demand, then there would be no need for the medical society to be so eager to implant babies.

Many of hearing Parents are high respectful from the medical technology for their Deaf babies successful hear and speak to interact with other hearing people better communication. They look us down due to lack of promotion in our career from the Federal Government agencies and Private Industries.

There are always exasperating moments when a hearing person, without an interpreter and without a pen and a pad (and probably in a hurry) needs to speak to a deaf person.

The hearing person should not panic to learn how to sign language. He should speak clearly and carefully, but without exaggerating the words, they want to make sure the deaf person understands. Some of Deaf people's nodding of a Deaf head does not always indicate complete understanding.

If the Deaf person asks the hearing person to slow down, the hearing person should not show anger and frustrate in having to repeat words all over again. Some of hearing people have a nasty attitude due to no patient to communication with us. The society influence on Federal Government agencies and Private Industries to hiring Deaf people's job. They declined their apply for the promotion climb up the career level due to communication barrier.

Many parents are afraid that their Deaf children would like us to struggle promotion in our careers and education. When Deaf people become older or graduate from High School and collect Social Security Income rest of their life to stay home.

According to our primary language is ASL, struggle to writing into properly English structure language. Itself ASL is beautiful language into our feel and facial expression.

It is very sad because many high school Deaf students were not trying very hard to finish their education and get a successful in their jobs like hearing people. They look up into older Deaf people who on their SSDI. They think, SSDI are cool free income from the goverment. Stay home 24/7, watch TV, play with video game and do the internet, etc... Life is such short ! :(

I have seen alot of Deaf people who are very brilliant. They did not try very hard enough to approach into reality world !

Once a Deaf person, or any person, encounters discrimination from the majority over and over again, it makes them give up on trying. They develop the attitude of "Why try? I'll never be able to do any better no matter what I do because they won't give me a chance." Discrimination doesn't jsut prevent people from doing...it prevents them from even wanting to try. The sad part is, it doesn't have anything to do with being deaf. It is the result of the way hearing react to and treat someone who is deaf.

Yes exactly, I struggle to apply many positions, they declined me due to oral and write skill. I become more involve with EEO Disability Committee to educational them and correspondence with OPM and EEO for a better Federal Goverment Disability Accommation. It is a long way go due to Federal Government have judgement (there is no law for Federal colleagues sue to the Federal agencies) which the congressment has not pass the law.

Many parents are afraid to interact with Deaf adults (like us) because of their poor signing skills, possible due to low exposure and interact with other Deaf children's Parents and Teachers. However, many parents are intolerable to approach into Deaf World / Community. It could jeopardize between hearing Parents and Deaf children's relationship. Especially, the Deaf teenagers rebel against their Parents’ decision. Deaf teenager apparently enjoyed the social intermittently atmosphere at the Deaf School.

I am extremely impressed with Alabama School for the Deaf. Their fluently in sign language is so so AMAZED !! They are so BRILLIANT Deaf children. I wish, many hearing Parents see their advance education than mainstream and oral method. I am flabbergasted to seeing the Deaf children are so intelligence. I would not be surprised; their career will be achievement when they finish their colleges!

We strongly encourage Parents look into other side on us to prevent to get their Deaf babies, children and teenagers get their cochlear implants to destroy their true identification.

The medical perspective is that Deafness is deviation from the norm, in a way that is not positive, as it is the loss or absence of a sense otherwise expected in humans.

I don't agree with cochlear implantation in infancy. I don't agree with fixing people who never were broken.

But I understand doctor's viewpoints. That's all they know- that is the best of their understanding and years of training.

**nodding agreement** A chage of perspective in medical training is what is necessary to create a lasting change in the way the medical community views and addresses deafness. We need to educate the medical establishment of differing perspectives and solutions.

Oh not again, here we go with "it will destory the deaf culture"
NO it won't, because CI is only for severe/profound hearing loss that receive little or no benefit from hearing aid, get that through your head. There is very small percentage of people having severe-profound hearing loss while there's 1 in 10 (I think, don't bash me if I'm wrong but I remember it was high number) of people having any kind of hearing impairment. So how can ci destroy the culture and ASL when there's million others that's not deaf enough for CI? Plus I believe deaf culture and asl is biggest it ever been today than it ever was before, and asl is 4th most popular language in usa, how is that "destroying the culture" and "forcing us to accompany with hearing people instead of them try to with us deaf people" oh please this is hearing world don't expect every one of them learn asl just to take care of small percentage of population that's like you'll learn how to be gay for small percentage of population being homosexual. You just simply don't learn their way or other. So everyone will have it their own way and learn to ignore the difference, pride, identity, any kind difference to respect them and attempt to interact instead of bashing, judging, look down to people, tell them they're wrong and horible people or horrible thing they chose to do or to be and many things. Just STOP and leave it alone and accept it, get over it and be respectful and its not any of your business to say anything about other person choice or any of it but respect and get along please!
And remember CI is for severe/profound to be able to hear, exactly same how hearing aid is for hard of hearing (from mild to severe) to be able to hear. Its not any difference in how it help them to hear and it doesn't destroy the identity at all, its mere a metal device in your head that send sound to brain, like hearing aid doesn't destroy the identity either they are just amplification device sit in your ear.

No, we are not saying that CI will destroy Deaf culture. What we are saying is that medical professionals need to understand that persons who receive a CI are still deaf, and that deafness does not end with a CI. To date, medical professionals see the only solution as medical intervention. They do not include psychosocial aspects in their viewpoint.

Here we go again.
First of all...I hate it when people talk about deaf people and make a judgment that ALL deaf people feel this way. We (and i'm saying ALL deaf people) are not lemmings. We don't follow one rule.

Secondly - I'm deaf, I am fluent in sign language and spoken language. However, ENGLISH is my primary language, not ASL. So be careful when you use "our" as all of us. There's quite a few people on this forum that are deaf and doesn't sign/learning how to sign, and English is their primary language.

Thirdly - I believe I tried very...no, let me revise that...I believe I DID do hard enough in the real world. Face it. We will be a minority, and we will ALWAYS be a minority, unless there's some Borg cube that's coming to assimilate all hearing people leaving the deaf people on Earth. I have TWO college degrees, and I'm getting a third in Game Design (so yeah, I stay home and play video games all day because it's MY JOB). I think it's some people (not naming who ) is not TRYING HARD ENOUGH or feel like they can't do anything. My boyfriend, who is hearing btw, push me as hard as I can because I can do ANYTHING I WANT and never allowed me to have my deafness as a barrier.

Lastly - I can speak, but I can't hear. Many deaf people who cannot speak well is due to lack of training in using their voice. ALL DEAF people (within reason), have perfectly good voice box. It's just the lack of training in this area. So revise that to Deaf people can do ANYTHING, but hear.

We can go on and on about this debate/contriversal issues and it will never end. Accept the fact that the world is changing, and I, personally, have seen many hearing elementary schools that are teaching the children sign language and a little about deaf culture. They're not perfect, but they're trying. Better than 30 years ago, don't you think? What does all this come down to? EDUCATION! ASL is being taught at H.S. all over the country, as well as colleges as a foreign language. Did that happen 15-20 years ago? No.

I could go on and on, so I'm not going to do that...yet. :D

An open challenge:

Can you please name any medcal doctors or professionals who are stating that deaf indviduals who receive cochlear implants are no longer deaf? Name one, so we know whether your statement is true or whether you are just making it up to bolster your position.

I have personally talked to cochlear surgeons such as Simon Parisier and Noel Cohen to name a few. I have personally talked to professionals in the field such as Suzanne Walzman, Bill Shapiro, Pat Chute, Dianne Brackett, to name a few more. I have attended many seminars, lectures and/or presentations over the years where I have heard not only these people speak but others such as Ellen Rhodes, Jean Moog, Thomas Balkany, Myimoto, Geers, Ganz and many others and not once did any of these doctors and professionals EVER say that a deaf person who receives a cohclear implant is no longer deaf.

So, please answer the very simple question: give us the name of someone, anyone who is a doctor or a professional who says a person receiving a cochlear implant is no longer deaf?

The only one perpetuating this myth about doctors, professionals and cochlear implants are those who are opposed to cochlear implants.

OOOOOO....I'm impressed! If you will venture into some of the other threads you wil find answers to your question.

OOOOOO....I'm impressed! If you will venture into some of the other threads you wil find answers to your question.

Since my post is responsive to the topic of this thread, there is no need to have to "venture" anywhere else but nice try attempting to deflect the fact that you did not answer the question by attempting to put the burden on someone else.

Answer the question or move on.

And you base that unsubstantiated statement upon what factual basis? How many hearing parents of cochlear implanted children have you ever had a conversation with? Please enlighten us all with your extensive knowledge and background regarding parents of children with cochlear implants.

BTW while you are at it please explain why deaf parents of deaf children are also choosing cochlear implants for their children? Are they also taking the "easy way out"?

Would you please explain your comments regarding parents who choose not to implant taking the "safe way out"?

The cochlear implant is one of the more intriguing technologies that the FDA regulates. It terms of its medical effectiveness, the device is truly revolutionary. Before this technology hearing impaired individuals were consigned to amplification devices that ameliorated only some of the symptoms of deafness, and did nothing towards the actual causes. This technology has the promise to actually cure hearing impairment and allow people to hear sounds and tones that were previously impossible to duplicate.

There you go. From a paper presented at Harvard University.

Great Statement Jillio!! :ty: for being brave enough to state the raw unvarnished truth!

re: Kalista question --
Why - Why the Medical Society constantly pressure on the Parents?

I think the medical community pressures parents because they can, simply, they prey on the vulnerability and guilt that society bestows on those ""out of the norm"" and promotes a one size fits all fix that too many find out too late - doesn't work.
