I came across this blogging about the reporting both the positive and negative aspects of CI, I think it's very important that people out there including hearing parents of deaf children should be aware of unsuccessful and the complications of cochlear implants, it's not a miracle device that they're thinking deep down in their minds or hearts.

article on cochlear implants

Another interesting links of people who experienced the complications.

Oh, I agree.

I can agree, but I have CIs and I am not going to worry about the negative part of it. Even if I was a parent of a child with CIs I would also not want to view the negative side.

I am going to make this work and enjoy each day with my hearing.

Yes, I agree that it's important to know about positive and negative/cons and pros on both sides.

I would ignore if there're 100% positive and 0% negative because I can tell it's a false. I rather to search pros/cons and positive/negative on both sides before I make a decision.

That's your decision but the problem that I have seen is that the parents deny the negatives that come with the CIs and the hard work that comes with it. As a result, the child doesnt get the expected benefits from them and to add on top of that, no exposure to signing just makes it even worse.

Why not? Just like one person stated in that blogging that there are many that wouldn’t come forward with the negative side, what is it to be so ashamed about?

I don't understand help me out there will you?

Yea I agree shel--

Did you read on the blogging that some still rely on signs and how signs should be used with CIs for young children?

If I chose to live my life in negative then I will never achieve anything. Maybe the negative side is not that negative - stactic, batteries going out, practicing. Maybe CI users are telling the truth. I love mine, I enjoy hearing. I would do it over again.

I have not experienced anything I would think of as negative. It works for me. I'm not sitting at home thinking of processor or implant not working.

Honestly, I researched made my decision.

We judge parents for their decisions to implant, how many of us really understand and respect them. We don't know what they did for research, what they went through day in and day out. How they are helping there children. Instead we get this I have seen, I have heard, I don't like. Well that is not what parents or CI wears need. Don't judge unless we have walked a mile in their shoes.

And have those parents walked a mile in their deaf child's shoes?

Wow, I love honest people and I agree wholeheartedly that they should tell people about positive and negative aspects of CI like she did and I also agree that people should know there are two sides of everything, so everyone knows what to expected later on...That's why I feel it is very important they research carefully before making this huge decision because CI is not for everyone...

If my husband had thought for one moment that he would be living the rest of his life with vertigo and that several times a day his whole world would spin, I highly doubt he would have gone through with implantation. Yes, he is in the minority of those who have had difficulties with implantation. Yes, he is now able to hear. Is it worth it to him? NO He was able to function quite well in life prior to implantation, and now his entire personality has changed and it has taken its toll on the entire family.

I wish someone had said, "hey, there is a possibility that such and such could happen if you get implanted". Maybe he would have made a different decision, one that he won't regret for the rest of his life.

But, how can a parent make an informed decision regarding any aspect of their child's future without having the information necessary to weigh pros and cons? Not having complete information is having negative affects onthe language development and educational acheivement of numerous deaf children. To simply ignore the negative rather than investigate it and weigh it against the postive is nothing more than the avoidance of reality.

Excellent question. It has been my personal experience that the majority of hearing parents of deaf children do not attempt to see things from a deaf perspective, but only from their own familiar hearing perspective. Like wise with the hearing professionals.

I am so sorry about your husband's complications, but it is a perfect example of candidates not being suppplied with all of the information they need to make an informed choice.

Amen jillio that's one of the best post, it is still difficult to predict how a child will perform with a cochlear implant.

I'm sorry to hear about your husband, Eve.

OMG I cant believe ANY parent would choose to ignore the negative aspect of implanting a child. To ME right there would be considered child abuse. IMHO you cannot implant without making an informed decision. Informed means not just the positive but the negatives as well.

For example, if I had a child that needed a artificial leg, I would not just say oh go ahead and do it as the positives will outweigh the negatives so I dont need to hear them! My goodness, that right there would be saying I dont wanna know how to take care of it if something goes wrong.

I know for a fact artificial legs cause soreness, chafing and many other things. I would wanna know that before getting one for my child.

A CI is a much bigger issue than an artificial leg! I for one would consider myself negligent if I didnt find out any negative effects!

*smh*

May I ask what personal experience? I'm not sure anyone is qualified to make that judgement. I'm not.
