Thumbs up

Sorry for so many posts today - been busy with final exams this week and only just now had the chance to make replies.

Anyway - today I had, not really a CI-moment but more of a revelation of sorts. I had just completed my final exam for calculus at college - the LAST test, and the final class for my upgrading prior to going into medical lab tech.

While waiting for the bus, a older gentleman came up to me and asked me if I knew when the bus that went downtown was arriving, as he could't read the schedule (print's small) on the board. I got up and found out for him and told him, then we sat down and just started talking - he asked me about my schooling, and I told him how sometimes I feel I'm "too old" to be back in school, still trying to work towards "what I want to be when I grow up," and he told me I'm never to old to stop learning, how his 100 year old father spoke 12 languages and was learning Mandarin when he died.... we spoke of life in Nanaimo, about our passions (he loves to write poetry and plays) and just had a lovely conversation. My bus came before his, so I wished him the best and told him I thoroughly enjoyed talking to him. He wished me the best on my 'scholastic endeavors' as he called them.

When I got on the bus, I sat down, and realized that something as simple as that - having a wonderful conversation with a stranger was something I would have totally shied away from before I had my CI. Now I engage people and the reward of a lovely conversation and the good feeling that comes with it is just so wonderful!

So just a 'feel-good' type moment....I LOVE my CI. And not a day goes by that I am not thankful for what it has brought back to my life

My daughter and I were driving around, it was very busy day for me so I was distracted. I was thinking what I had to do next. Of course we had the radio on but I wasn't really listening. My daughter turns to mom and says mom you are not leaning like a cholo. I told her what, she said your song is on the raido and you are not leaning like a cholo. There is this new song and I actually really like it, the song's title is lean like a cholo. So whenever it comes on I put my elbows up and move them side to side because that is what the song tells you to do and my daughter copies me. But today she heard the song and told me to lean like a cholo. I was laughing.

Yesterday I was on the radio to talk about our due process case and getting CART for my daughter. When I left in the morning, I put the radio station on through the internet so my husband could hear me. On the radio show I talked about how when my son was young, people would stare at his implant and start talking really slow and loud. He would then turn to me and ask me mom, do they think I am dumb, I'm just deaf not dumb or stupid. He then calls me on the phone and tells me that he heard me telling the story about him on the radio. This is just so amazing that he clearly heard everything I said and then called me on the phone and I was on a cell phone we had a conversation about this event and what the rest of day was going to be like.

I think that being able to have a complete conversation with my children is the best part of them having an implant. Now that my daughter is 17 years I am just so happy to be to talk to her about so many things and her being able to understand what I am saying. The other wonderful thing is that they are able to talk on the phone. When they were young I use to worry about them not being able to talk on the phone.

Yeah, Neecy, that's great, isn't it? And to think how everyday normal hearing people take something like a simple conversation for for granted. With us it's so precious!

Neecy, I couldn't have said it better myself!

I'll never forget the first conversation I had after getting my CI. It was an unforgettable moment and something I'll treasure forever.

Not a day goes by that I'm not thankful for this wonderful technology!

I'm glad I'm not the only one asking- I can understand a little bit, but none of it seems to have ANY bearing on CI Moments??? Anybody here better at translating ASL to English care to help?

I think he went off topic here talking about himself and how he has the right to his decision for removing his CI and it seems like he is saying that he is afraid that u will be against him for his decision. (I hope I got that right)

U are right..it has nothing to do with the topic of the thread. Oh well..either he wanted to personally tell u this message or he didnt understand the topic of this thread.

Anyone else can correct me if I am wrong.

We now have ooooo for moo. So Ashley now knows 2 animals. Ah ah ah for quack quack. She sees them and makes the sound before we push the button to make it go. She also is turning to me when you ask her where mama is. She is starting to understand more I think.

Awww. Ashley is so cute. Reading about what she is doing and the different sounds she is making is very interesting.

How are her tactile issues?

She probably is understanding more than u think. Receptive language develops before expression language does.

She is adorable!

U are doing a good job!

She is opening up to a lot of different things. She will play patty cake on my hand. She uses open palm so much more now. She will hold my hands to walk. She is even letting me show her some basic signs with her hands. She will tolerate it for a few seconds and then pulls away but that is much better than before. She is getting more comfortable in her self. If that makes any sense. She is so much more happy and calm. She takes food from a spoon now with almost no resistance. Once we get her going she opens up and goes for the spoon if it is not getting there fast enough. My baby seems to be growing up a bit. We have had to put up gates all over. She loves to explore. She is very nosy. New people and new surroundings do not seem to scare her at all. She checks them out for a few and then goes on about her business. We still have a long way to go but she is doing so well. Sometimes too smart for her own good. Sorry to go on and on but a lot has happened in the past 2 to 3 months.

Is that a pic of her walking in your avatar? U mentioned before that she was struggling to walk if I remember correctly. How is that going?

Ashleysmommy,

I remember a time when you were concerned about how Ashley's visual impairment would affect her, but it sounds as if she is doing quite well. I'm happy to hear that she's confidently exploring her environment -- that's always a good sign and shows that she isn't letting anything stand in her way! Good for her!

She is pulling up and cruising around every where. She is not ready to let go just yet. She is showing a real independent side. She is holding on to the wall in the pic. She goes to our front door and bends over looks through her legs. A friend of ours stopped out front and called us and told us we were teaching her bad habits. We asked what they were talking about they said Ashley was mooning them. She is very mobile and very adventurous right now.

I have always pushed her to explore things. I want her to feel safe and confident so I let her go. To an extent(I follow close behind).
