I would love to challenge new experience hearing and sounds so many different noises and their voices... but I can't go forth like this...

Wow..I didnt know about the hybrid cars and roller coasters. That's no fun!!! Thank god my parents never implanted me cuz I am a roller coaster addict! LOL!

She's right (or the presenter..) - there are many things to think about.

Just a comment..
Magnetic fields can be dangerous but more for wiping out the program. No program, no sound. Like your creditcard. Put it on the counter with a magnetic reader, and your card is a no-no.
So, nothing will be damaged, but the person will be deaf until the next visit at an audiologist.

At no point will magnets be pulled through the skull.. LOL You need a lot more power for that... (Like MRI)

If hybrid cars would be dangerous, the you would not be able to drive with bank-cards or other cards with magnetic strips in your posession.... That would be a bad sales-argument!!

Made me wonder is that side effect negative things when you're on ci.. Feel electrode or fried cooked ci gone?

Which specification. I read her blog and no explanation why and also respond the viewer comment seems nothing knowledge but need more than know about side effect may lead into CI turns into bad thing coming from magnetic fields.

I love my wife’s hybrid SUV. It has GPS and a far better turning radius than my car. Whenever my wife doesn’t need the hybrid, I take it. Well, thanks to a recent blog titled, “The Truth about Cochlear Implants“, my wife’s hybrid is now mine! It’s far too dangerous for her to ride the hybrid because she has a cochlear implant (CI), the blogger explains, so I am nobly protecting my wife’s health through this selfless decision.

According to an unidentified audiologist who presented to the blogger’s graduate-level class, hybrids are very dangerous for CI users. Here are the specific excerpts of the presentation from the blog:

This means that a person with CI should not ride roller coasters with magnetic brakes (newer roller coasters usually have this, not those wooden ones). The magnetic force is too strong for the CI. Same thing goes for MRIs (except for the Nucleus 3 system). If there is a magnet section in a science museum, a child with CI should never go into that area. And also, have you ever touched one of these blue/black balls with swirling electricity… and when you touch it, your hair goes straight up? Children with CIs should never touch those, nor should they touch other kids who are touching the ball thing.

Hybrid cars are pretty new, they’re pretty expensive but they’re great for the environment and maybe later in the future they will become more popular and less expensive. However, people with pacemakers cannot ride these cars. Now, people with CIs are warned to not ride in these cars.
My wife has been a proud hybrid owner since 2001 (yes, she owned the original Prius, 40 miles per gallon, baby!). Upon revealing this to the blogger, she responded, “I would suggest you, for the sake of ur [sic] health and the longevity of ur [sic] ci [sic], to [sic] check with your doctor.”

My wife rides roller coasters and she’s had a MRI before. No kidding! She touches magnetic objects everyday and she has even touched the “ball thing” at the science museum. What a hair-raising experience! At home, we have a cute kids book that includes magnetic objects. Thankfully the book isn’t dangerous according to the blogger, “Small magents [sic] shldnt [sic] be harmful, stronger ones might be.”

I love roller coasters too, I wouldn't want to give that up just to hear with cochlear implant. :Ohno:

Exactly!

Before I went under the knife for my CI, I asked my audiologist what should I watch out for with my CI...she just said no MRI unless the magnet gets taken out for the duration, and to be careful of static (all that would happen is that the CI programs gets wiped out, no bigger cuz I have 2 processors for my left ear anyway). I pretty much can do about everything. As for the magnetic rollercoasters, I know that if one has magnetic field that is dangerous to pacemakers or CIs, they will post a sign saying NO pacemakers/no Cochlear Implant or something like that. Not all roller coasters have magnetic fields.

This just confirms what many posters have been saying all along: there is more to the CI issue--or any invasive surgery--than sound perception. All factors need to be considered before undergoing surgery, and unfortunately, too many candidates are not being given all of the information they should have--both positive and negative.

Need open discussion postive vs negative feedback please!

Not for herself... got words coming from her Audiologist's comment!
That what she did explanation to everyone about her story.

Im not againist CI.. as far some of what reason as main concern issued the health reason... for CI.

I've read some their viewers' comment , stated that metal thing tasty lost and twitching their eyebrows due nerves.. May some Doctor might mistake operation right placed.. that how wonder about children's welfare their emotions speak it out how? Adult can speak it out and feeling as their own emotions feelings expression as concern.. How's about Child speak it out and trying to tell their parent.. talk about hurting or some kinds... Parent doesn't think that side effect but never knew... How can prevent that way...

I wish Doctor should have more further researching the ci to prevent happening from magnetic fields and others... before implanted ci on their head...

Do you have any concern about yourself feeling expression issue related ci when you got implanted.. anything funny and something hit you.. isn't same previous one.. and should be advised to Doctor as your concern health?

I'm all asking you some question but can you fill me in the blank..
Not here for debate w/you.. no as same other anyone..

Just throw postive and negative things feedback would be greater benefits..

This is temporary. I did lost SOME taste and had some metallic taste but only lasted a few weeks(3-4 weeks). It is back to normal now. I can taste everything now and there is no numbness or metallic taste now.

The audiologist said that she had just found out about the magnetic fields and hybrid car and roller coaster warnings just two weeks ago, and unfortunately, it seem that the doctors and audiologist didn't do enough tests for research on this....

I used to love rollercoasters but I'm past that stage now.

I really doubt there is that a big risk with them. My take it that it might possibly wipe your program if you are unlucky. But what if it does? You just go back to the audie and get it reloaded. It would be annoying but not terrible and awful like some posters here seem to imply.

They say not to go down plastic slides for the same reason. But I do (I have a 4 year old) and have experienced no problems.

As Lucia said, if there is a magnetic field on a roller coaster that would make it dangerous if you have a pacemaker, or CI, it must be posted at the entrance. COuld you imgine the law suit that would follow an incident of a rollercoaster killing someone with a pacemaker or damaging a CI? That would be a clear cut loss for the amusemanet park. They would lose millions of dollars.

From what I have read in this thread, most of the content are partial truths. It is correct that the giant static elec. ball COULD damage a CI. All it would do is erasre the map. As Cloggy said, that would cause the program to be erased. ! trip to the audi,and its fixed. BUT what the article is not saying, it is perfectly safe to wear a CI while you are touching that big ball with your hair standing up. All you have to do is turn off your CI while you Are touching it. After you stop touching the ball, you touch somethinglike a metal handrail opr another person to disipate the static elec., turn the CI on and you and the CI are fine.
As Cloggy also said, will a hybrid car damage your credit cards? NO. Look at the words written above. The lady with a CI had driven her car since 2001. THAT IS 6 YEARS! Notice that the article said there may be a risk of damage. After 6 yeaers of use, apparently there was no damage or injury. If there was the article would have said so. As I sadi, the article is full of partial truths. It seems that people here are reading the article and believing what they want to think. Instead of being told what to think, research it and decide what you think. Dont be a sheep. Think for yourself.

That's right. And many CIers (like myself) are provided with 2 processors for each ear, so it's not really a problem. If the processor I am wearing gets its map wiped out, I have a back-up processor. So, not really that huge of a deal unless your CI center did not provide you with 2 processors, only 1, then all it takes is a trip to your audiologist to reload your map.

When I first got activated, I used to worry so much about static in clothes (fleece, etc) and was wiping myself with anti static dryer sheets but now I'm much more relaxed, I love love love fleece especially in the winter and I have worn fleece with ZERO problems! None of my maps have gotten wiped out. CIs of today are not as fragile as it used to be a few years ago. Technology just keeps getting better. You know how CPU of the computers used to be much more fragile years ago, now they are not as fragile...same concept. Of course, we all still have to exercise some caution with some things sometimes...but not as much as years ago.

Hmmm I googled "Cochlear Implant + rollercoaster" (also hybrid car) and the only document there suggesting some bad thing was the blog itself! No science journals, no warnings nada. However when I do the same for plastic slides there is heaps of documented material. Someone asked Elissa to reveal her audiologists's sources so I think the jury is still out on that. I think we need to get some more credible facts first rather than rely on hearsay.

I noticed during the google search that one Cochlear Implant manufacturer, Med-EL sell an external device that is suitable for wearing on rollercoasters MED-EL Cochlear Implants :: Symphony of Technology (presumably because there is the possibility lose them, just as with hearing aids). Obviously they are unaware of the dangers too!

I think though judging from the comments the blog was music to a lot of people's ears though. We readily believe something that we want to believe even when no tangible facts have been provided because it confirms our previously held views and mindset.

I'm not saying that the claims of the blog is wrong but until she provides actual data and facts I think we should be skeptical.
