Hi,

Hi,
what does CI sounds like compare it to Hearing aids

With Hearing aids i can hear some simple sounds like dog barking, toliet flushing etc..... I am considering to get a cochlear implant. I have been wearing my hearing aids for two weeks, I hated it!

I am curious about Cochlear Implants and have often wondering what it feels like.

Does it vibrates inside the cochlear? Thanks! SpaceyUFO

It's hard to explain how it feels like and sounds like when I hear sounds with my CI but I can tell you for sure it doesn't vibrate.

For profound deaf, I had experience with CI and sounds is MUCH different from hearing aids because sounds from CI is too loud (it's normal for first activation then getting usually it) and can hear with any objects that make sounds to interpreter in brain, same with oral language. I cannot understand about oral language with hearing aids but can understand so well with CI. I have said that CI is bring more advanced sounds that can understand with oral language and sounds from objects, such as radio, alarm or other thing.

It's up to you to get CI. Good luck with CI appointment.

Spacey,

Each person is different, but my CIs sound the same as my HAs -- only *much* clearer and louder (although not painful). I would say that it took approximately 6 months before sounds, voices and music became "normalized" (i.e. what I remember with HAs).

When my first CI was activated, bird songs sounded like chimes, typing on a computer keyboard sounded like popcorn popping and traffic sounded like static.

Over time, these sounds began to normalize. I am now able to hear and recognize different bird songs, typing on my computer keyboard sounds like clicking and traffic sounds like traffic.

I don't experience any vibration -- although this wasn't the case on the day my first CI was activated. When my audi set my T levels (the loudest sounds you can hear without discomfort) for the high frequencies, I felt the beeps rather than hearing them. My audi said this was due to the fact that I haven't heard high frequencies in a very long time (20 years). This sensation only lasted a few days before it completely disappeared.

Hear Again

Left ear - Nucleus 24 Contour Advance with 3G
Implanted: 12/22/04 Activated: 1/18/05

Right ear - Nucleus Freedom
Implanted: 2/1/06 Activated: 3/1/06

SpaceyUFO,

No I don't get any vibration in my cochlear. I don't really think anymore about how it actually feels except when I have a change of map (program). Some maps have been louder than before so I would notice that but other than that it just feels good.

One thing that feels different though is not having an ear mold in the ear.

Have you only worn hearing aids for 2 weeks of your life or are you talking about a new set of aids? Vibration sounds like the aids may be too powerful for you?

What if all Deaf people get CI, will the deaf community be extinct????

No, It won't affect with deaf community.

You know that some deaf people with CI who become adult then their decide if want quit to wear CI or start learn with ASL, or even focus on deaf culture. If you are adult then its up to you to quit to wear CI.

You better to ask Cloggy or Lilly's dad about what happen if their children who become adult.

I don't feel Vibration when wear hearing aids or CI.

I don't have CI...

I only have bone conduct hearing aids

And hey, people who have CI, what do you do when you wash your hair?
Do you just wet most of your head and make sure the CI is not wet?
I don't know, I don't really know about CI.

What's bone conduct hearing aids?

And hey, people who have CI, what do you do when you wash your hair?
Yea, You can wash your hair when CI device turn off.

Do you just wet most of your head and make sure the CI is not wet?
Yea, Freedom is splash and sweat proof, and cannot take shower or swimming with CI device.

I don't know, I don't really know about CI.

It's okay but you would learn about CI.

That's answer in your quote.

We do exactly the same as you. We take off the external speech processor (which looks like a hearing aid with no mold) and then jump in the shower.

Bone Conduct Hearing Aid is like this....

BoneCondAid2.jpg

Why they called it Bone Conduct Hearing Aid?

It is because the AID has microphone and AID vibrate the Bone...
Just like the Eardrum, Ear Drum, it vibrate, which is why people need
eardrum to hear, if they bust their ear drum they can't hear.

So since the Bone Conduct Hearing AID has microphone and vibrate the sound.... your brain signal that and let you hear.

And plus it is like a HEADPHONE or Headband... I can take it off
while I take shower or sleep...

CI is like Bone Conductor Hearing Aid, but Bone Conductor Hearing Aid is not implanted.

Does it require to get surgery?

no.

I think CI implant is a waste of money... Just paying doctors to
do that... $3,000... ugh.

I let a deaf man wear my Bone Conductor Hearing Aid,,, he was like,
"I can hear!!!"

My Bone Conductor Hearing Aid is $300 and my SSI medicaid can pay that.

I have question about CI.

One of my black friend is concern about get CI, and he's using cornrow as hairstyle but he don't feel like to get decide because it wouldn't compatible with cornrow. How about magnet goes in head? He's severe hearing loss but used mild when he was young and almost developing into profound in late age, and he quit to wear hearing aids because it would affect with hearing ability. He's using ASL and oral language too.

Hearing aids is just like iPod, some people are losing their hearing after turn into high volume on iPod.

no.

You have no clue. Don't make ignorant statements.

Search here in AD or goggle the 'net to find out more about CIs.

*Rolling one eyes*

Hearacle??? Oh... I don't know, maybe I should order one and see if I like that....
and it is wireless....

Can you swim with the CI????

Well I rather wear a Bone Conduct Hearing Aids than to have doctor
drill hole in my head and implant CI on my head.

To answer the first question, yes one can swim with CI. One just takes off the processor and coil transmitter. The only limitation is depth of water which is some 80+ feet deep.

A bone conductor HA only works with bone conduction losses. It won't work for other types of losses. Most hearing losses are related to cochlear hair issues. If severe enough, only a CI can deal with that one. Otherwise, most people get by with HAs.

Again, educate yourself on these things.
