Hi all,

I am a new poster and I wasn't sure if this topic would fit better here or in the introduction forum, so I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong place. :)

A little about me - I am a college student at Temple University in Philly studying economics and German. I have moderate to severe (I think; at least, that's the way it's described to me) sensorineural hearing loss in both ears, for which I wear BTEs. If you want to know more for any reason, just ask. :)

On to the dilemma - I have been lurking on this forum as a guest for a while now, but a major crisis has happened over the weekend that prompted me to sign up and see if I could get some advice. Basically, I lost one of my hearing aids while out and about this weekend. I have been wearing HAs for going on 18 years now, and this would be the second one that I have lost. (I lost the first one when I was super little, right after I had gotten them, when it fell out on the playground. Apparently it wasn't sized correctly or something.) Sorry for the long explanation there, but I'm really trying to find something to feel better about, haha.

I have tried retracing my steps, but I doubt I'm going to find it anywhere. I thought I had put it in a special little pocket in my purse, where I always put them if I'm listening to music or something, but I just checked this morning and the left one wasn't in there. Needless to say, I am very confused/upset. It's probably hanging out on the streets of Philly somewhere... I vaguely remember shuffling some things around in my purse where it could have fallen out. I usually notice things like that, though, but it's gone now... :(

Anyway, I currently wear Naida V SPs. They seem like an older model, because I seem to remember getting them in 2007 as a high school freshman. At this point I'm wondering if it would be better to just talk to my audiologist about getting a new pair, rather than trying to replace an older-model HA. I'm not sure of the specifics of how the insurance covers them, but I do know my dad's plan from his work helps out with the cost... currently trying to work up the nerve to call my mom and explain. I have a little under $2000 for an out-of-pocket budget. Of course, it's upsetting that I have to spend it on what seems like such a careless mistake, but s**t happens.

Sorry for the long post, but I'm just kind of freaking out right now and not sure what to do. Thank you for reading all of this!

it pain when that happens I lost more than one but I lucky I NHS and get free one...is your ones covered on an insurance...is it possible put few flyers in near bye shops or stick one on lamp-post

Do you have home owner insurance , if yes see if they'll help cover part of the cost of replacing your HA you should call your audi too and see if they loan you a HA . If you're working or going to school rehab may help you get new HA .

Definitely after seven years it is time to get a new pair. Technology advances .

I am not sure if I do, but I doubt it would be covered anyway because I'm positive I didn't lose it at home. I live 1.5 hours away from where I'm currently staying to go to school (I am doing a summer semester). I did not think of the OVR option. I haven't been in touch with them lately but I will give it a shot.

I am planning to go tomorrow (running out of time now as I have a test in a few hours) to see if there's a chance I might have dropped it somewhere in center city rather than on campus, and if that turns up nothing then I will start making calls.

Thanks for the help, everyone.

E: got in touch with my mom and she suggested OVR. Apparently my dad's workplace doesn't cover hearing equipment - it was my mom's old work that I was thinking of. So that makes this a lot harder, but I will be contacting a lot of people to make this work.

If you've only lost it since this morning, I would relax and try to continue looking for it. You might be surprised that it shows up somewhere.

After that, I would certainly try home owners insurance.

Finally, get a new pair ASAP. This is not the 70's or 80's, there have really been some major improvements for hearing aids.

I am trying to keep as relaxed as possible With an already-nervous personality, this is kinda hard to do :P . I just wanted to be on the ball about this because in PA, where I live, the state pays for hearing aids every three years until the age of 20. Well....... I am turning 21 on Friday. So one of my cheapest options for a completely new pair could be out of the question in a matter of days.

I am fairly sure I lost it Saturday while I was walking around Philly, so it's a huge area. I plan to see if one of the Chipotle employees (I ate there right around the time I think I lost it) saw it, but I am not very hopeful.

Planning to make a lot of phone calls tomorrow.

If you had your HA homeowner insurance they would had covered , I had my mine on my home owner insurance encase I lost my HA any place.
Can you get someone that can hear go to your house and see if thy can hear your HA feed backing , you may had lost outside .

Is there a public lost and found, at a Idk police station nearby? I have lost my clarinet once and my wallet another and each time someone turned it in. I'm too obsessive about checking my self for everything before I leave an area to lose my HA's. Though I did lose one for two weeks, I searched everywhere and gave up, my mom found it in the trash which luckily we forgot to bring to the curb. Maybe I'm just lucky. It's justifiable to get new hearing aids, the tech is new every 5-10 years.

get new hearing aids! since U had the Naida, I think you'll go nuts for the Q platform too :)

I am hoping so much that this will be an option for me, but I think I'm ultimately gonna have to use my dad's private insurance (I'm also covered under the plan) to simply replace the one that was missing. I don't really like the Naida V because the way to turn them on is so annoying (having to push the battery compartment in - my batteries are always falling out, plus they get turned on accidentally while not in my ears and then the battery drains until I notice).

Tomorrow morning I will call my audi. She is always super helpful and understanding. And I will be making the trek back into the city to hunt the missing one down!

re: the police station suggestion - also a fantastic idea. I was reluctant to go this time because I've misplaced things before and they aren't always the best about helping, but this is... kinda important.

Maybe someone found it and turn it into the police station. I know I would done that .

Unfortunately 99% of hearing aids these days! yo have to open the battery draw to turn off including the new Naidas.

Maybe if you put them in a case, you problem of them turning back on will stop?

I put mine in a case and they've never turned back on!

I think it is time to ad GPS traceable options for aids using an encrypted signal. There is no reason for lost hearing aids today.

if you re in school then try voc rehab if they can provides you hearing aids or not.

that's good :)

It really depends on the loss. A person with two aids might forget one. I would definitely have this problem with my cross over, sometimes you can't tell the amount of hearing you are missing(you can still hear from the other aid). For a person with one aid and profound loss, it's rare that person wouldn't remember and aid because there is such a big dependency on it.
