Hey there,

I'm gay and until recently was a student at Gallaudet. I'm hard-of-hearing, but I prefer ASL to spoken English, especially as my audiogram gets worse. My favourite professor was also gay told me all his boyfriends, hearing and deaf, signed...however, he did assure me that there are many trainable men out there.

Any guys out there have any experiences getting their hearing boyfriends to learn ASL? FWIW, it does help that the majority of male ASL interpreters are gay...

Curious

Definitely a good question, I'm curious also. I feel like so many people these days are more lazy but also would like to think people would always try if they really liked someone. I did know of someone who met their hearing boyfriend who initially didn't sign but then learned it little by little. They've been together forever. I'm gay and hearing and would totally learn it if I met someone I was intrigued by if I didn't already know ASL. Gay Interpreter student here lol. Shocking, I'm sure.

I guess the best way to look is to seek a community college that teaches ASL or Deaf Culture, maybe there's a Deaf Club in the school. Or you could always try Deaf Coffee meet ups.

I got lucky with my girlfriend she already knew about deaf culture and we both communicate through ASL at time to time, will be doing more of that as soon as I become more fluent.
